I am thinking of tackling my rub rail which is somewhat discolored and uneven in appearance. Any solutions on product and proceedure for an optimal renewal? Thanks.

I've given up on keeping it clean, but when I first got Lady Kay I was able to clean it up very nicely with Acetone....
But, if you rub too long it looses it's plasticity and gets sticky....so, wet the rag, or "rag in a box" (my favorite) rub an area quickly three or four passes and then leave it alone for a while..... Captain Oscar, USCG/OUPV C-42 #76 Lady Kay 3C/WK Chesapeake/Fort Lauderdale |

I have used a product from Island Girl Products in Honolulu which works well. The product is Sea Glow.
It comes as a liquid and you apply it with a paper towel. You allow it to sit in the sun light for a while which makes it work better. You will find with some mild rubbing it takes black off the rub rail. You then wipe a liquid product on called Silken Seal which protects the rail. I have tried the Island Girl stuff and it works ok but is very expensive and a little tricky to use. I heard about and now have tried some really cheap stuff that they sell at the 99 cent store called "Awesome Orange". I have no idea what it contains but it does a really terrific job on the rub-rail and the fenders as well. The stuff is so cheap I use it copiously which saves lots of elbow grease.

Here is my rub rail and lifeline cleaning secret - I use a fine Scotch Brite pad dipped in ordinary boat wax. The "smunge" comes off fairly easy, especially if you do this twice a year. Then polish off the left over wax with a rag. It is surprising how well that works. I tried everything else and nothing does the job as well.
