I installed an Optima 1000 just outboard of the 2 @ 4D's in the garage. Fits perfect after a little cutting of fiberglass. For a photo of what I'm
talking about, go to our home page,
www.catalina42.org/ Click on Craftsman Corner, then Aphrodisiac, hull 600 improvements 11/00 & 8/02. It's the 7th photo down. Click on the thumbnail for a larger shot. You can see the masking tape with 4 on it. I highly recommend another matching Perko battery switch for it. While at it, I recommend breaking the parallel batteries apart, putting them in parallel by putting the switch in ALL. This way, you can run any battery combination. It's a bit of a manual operation, but gives maximum flexibility. I really HATE to see any batteries permanently in parallel. All you need is 1 shorted cell to bring down the hole bank.

I put a starting battery in the same place. I mounted mine on the bulkhead that separates that compartment with the battery space. I had a bracket made, piece of strap aluminum bent to shape with two mounting holes drilled (cost $5 and took 5 minutes). Mounted the battery on the bulkhead that separates that compartment with the other 4 D's. The starting battery is charged with an echo charger from the two house that are in parallel. I also added a battery isolator and separate switch when I added the Balmar alternator and smart regulator. The result is that I have three house batteries (2 in parallel plus the single), a starting battery and a foolproof system. The batteries will charge automatically, I can select which I want to use for the house, and I can select the starting batteries or the house if necessary to start the enging. We will be on the hook about three days at a time (with the frig running) and there is enough power to do everything.
Good luck |
