Posts: 11 02/24/06 17:59:16	Tags : None I'm on my way back to the hardware store to return my third carbon monoxide detecter. Our Catalina 42 "Seas the Moment" #853 has a factory installed generator and we would feel better sleeping at night with a detector when the generator is running. All three detectors have gone off while the boat is at dock with nothing running...is their something in the air? Could it be the battery charger? That's the only thing on when running off shore power at the dock. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mac

Posts: 36 02/25/06 07:56:04	I'm a volenteer fire fighter and I know locating the sorce can sometimes be a bit trickey. I would be surprised if it was the charger. Do you have a friend in the local fire dept. Most have detectors that can help locate the sorce. In the meantime vent the boat well for a few hours. Try to open as many of the storage hatches as you can and use fans if you can (to change the air in as many places as possible). Double check that you have fresh batteries in the detectors and then try again. The main CO sorces on a boat are items that burn, motors, stove, heaters, ect. It is my understanding that the hardware store variety cannot tolerate the very high humidity that accumulates in a boat. My solution has been to remove the batteries when I am not on the boat. Possibly, the marine grade detectors will work better. Gerry Ragtime C42 108

Posts: 228 02/27/06 06:13:17	Rather than go to the hardware store, go to a marine store and get a xintex. They also make one that has an auto generator shutoff when it detects co. The standard for the industry is to install a co detector that turns on when the genset is on.

Posts: 36 02/27/06 06:27:17	Gerry, That may be, i'll have to ask around. I did have mine go off for no reason 2 summers ago and if I remember right, I had the boat sealed up tight for a while. Other than that I've had no propblems and I've had the same hardware store battery operated one for about 4 years now. I change the batteries 2 times a year. On the whole CO detectors are very simple, effective and reliable. Almost all problems with them are bad batteries with the odd faulty sensor appering very infrequently. It seems that the culprit was bad 'boat batteries' and the gases from boil over were setting off the detector. Replace the 2-4D's with 4 golf cart batteries and have not had a false alarm in weeks.
