I have seen photos of the boat being transported to a boat show. I was able to obtain the photos and Catalina spec sheet and drawings from my MdR Catalina dealer. Catalina now has the basics up on the website I believe.
I think that it is an interesting layout. I am awaiting its arrival to the west coast to preview. The base price is ARO $255,000 FOB Florida Plant. |

I went aboard at the Annapolis show and was pretty underwhelmed. While I'll probably end up with a deck salon or PH boat some day, I'm afraid the 440 misses the mark for me. The look doesn't suit my style. The profile looks somewhat heavy and awkward with the raised salon carried well forward and the side decks are very narrow (trade off for lots of room below in the DS).
Lots of well thought out features below and there's been an obvious effort to balance accomodations and stowage from a long term cruising perspective. I think Catalina has appropriately assigned this boat to the "Morgan line" and as a move up from the Morgan 38, it'll likely be a big success. I'd love to see Catalina try an approach similar the the Tartan 4400. (Yes, I know the T4400 is twice the price). Again. Lots of well thought out features, but I can't get past what, to me, are awkward looks. For now, I'll stick with my great looking 42. Larry Melalana, US 93280 Catalina 42 # 175 3 Cbn, WK |

I think Larry's review of the 440's looks is absolutely on the money -- this boat just doesn't look "right" for me. One of the reasons I chose to buy a Catalina was the elegant, sweeping appearance of the cabin-meets-deck-meets-hull....to me, the 440 looks like parts of small and large cabins were grafted together to make one.
I do like the look of a DS or PH (there's a Tartan 4400 for sale on my dock, and I drool sometimes walking by...), but, for me, the Catalina Morgan 440 misses by a mile. My $0.02. Rod,
Thanks for the photo tour. I really like most of what I see. I have always been a Morgan fan and Jerry Douglas did what looks like a good job. The engine placement and access may be the hitch for me. In the event of an economic upturn, I am prepared to seriously look at this boat and have made it known to my dealer. With a base price ARO $285k plus add-ons, I wonder how close in price it is to the 470? |
