Delivery delays! |
Lead | ||
|
Hi, We are waiting for our new C42...and waiting and waiting... Have other Catalina owners had delay after delay once they placed an order for a new boat? We were initially told it would arrive 4-5 months after we placed the order with our broker, and now it looks like we may get it 9 months later. We aren't really happy and are just wondering if anyone else had this experience.

Ours was delayed about 6 weeks from what we originally heard, but not like you are seeing. I wonder if they got pushed back because of huricane related shortages (plywood, etc.)

I took delivery of Hull #916 earlier this year. I signed my deal in late November 04 and took delivery in late February 05. Was about 3 weeks later than promised. This included transportation to East Coast. Delivery depends on demand but also timing of what configurations are in production ( i.e. pullman, centerline, 2/3 cabin). Good luck

I wonder if there is a way to force a manufacturer to perform as per the contract (they sure want your money on time...) or be penalized.
Of course if you buy a 1989 sitting right there in all it's state of neglect you don't have this problem..... Captain Oscar, USCG/OUPV C-42 #76 Lady Kay Chesapeake/Fort Lauderdale |

Oscar,
It is unlikely that any end-user buyer has a direct contract with the manufacturer. The sales contract is generally with the dealer. I have not looked at the fine print lately, but I suspect the lawyers have thoroughly covered delivery delays. CPayne14 mentioned "broker" rather than dealer. Are you working with an established Catalina dealership or some other sales organization? I have no complete answer for your question, of course, but there are a couple of possibilities. * Most or all boats are ordered by dealers before they begin production. Sometimes an order is cancelled, and a boat becomes available with a relatively short lead time. We have purchased two new Catalina boats in this manner, with lead times measured in weeks. Of course the basic configuration cannot be changed in these cases. The reason I mention this is that sometimes a dealer will learn about a delivery slot that is available with short lead time, and he offers it to his customer(s). It is possible that the availability disappears, however, if some other dealer grabs the available slot first. * There were a lot of damaged boats over the past year due to all of the hurricanes. I suspect the overall boat business is booming at the moment, which leads to long delivery times. Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870 |

Thank you for the comments. In hindsight, it would have been interesting to try and add a clause to the contract which would penalize Catalina a small percentage of the purchase cost for every week the boat arrives after the expected date. Like Capt. Oscar said, they want our money on time!
The boat was completed in September, but we won't get it until December as they say they can't get it on an earlier ship. I hope we have it for our Christmas cruise as we'll look pretty silly floating around the ocean in the dinghy... |

Ship as in boat or as in truck? I have seen 42's on low boys in the yard, but that might be for local delivery....are the coast to coast deliveries not done by truck? Getting a ship can indeed be difficult. Getting a truck should not be.....make some calls and "help them out".

A lot has to do with the location and destination. I ordered a 2003 C42 in mid November of 2002 and it was delivered to Marina del Rey in mid December, commissioned, outfitted, and headed to Mexico by in early January of 2003.
The few warranty bugs were handled while we were in Mexico (Ensenada) or upon our return in July of 2003. There will be some problems or blems to be resolved. One of the most annoying for me was sponginess in the sole around the bilge boards. Of course the plant is in Woodland Hills and the brokerage is owned by Frank Butler. I found the Brokerage to be most accommodating and easy to work with. The brokerage rep handled any and all issues promptly. |

Ship as in ship. We are in Australia!
I've checked out the shipping schedules and there are Wilhelmsen ships about every 2 weeks. I mentioned this to our broker right away! |
