No, and when we bought our boat last year no one brought it up.

I know of someone that had a new boat surveyed and major corrections in several systems were required. If you do not know systems nor boat manufacturing standards, a survey sometimes makes sense.

We purchased our boat new in 1993, & paid for a survey. Several items were pointed out by the surveyor - things either done improperly or not at all by the factory. e.g: members not glassed into the boat when they should have been. I'm glad we had it done. With this size investment, I think a good survey is important. Even the most reputable builders can have employees who make mistakes. I still think that, for the dollars spent, Catalina is one of the best boats made.

Most insurance companies require a survey. So, that is the first reason to do it if you want coverage.
A survey can be used as a tool to negotiate price. If your autopilot and a head are broken, it may cost you plenty to get someone down to the boat, not to mention a "loss" in terms of time using the boat. Problem - locating a competent surveyor who is not "connected" to some broker....... so that you really get a good survey. What to watch for: engine shut off cable autopilot -- inner workings and calibration head gaskets seals around the ports -- do they leak engine oil test leaks at the water heater, water tanks pressurization of the water tanks how smooth are the drawers is the propane tank a "new approved" bilge switch and float shower and refig pumps rudder post blisters, prop condition winch condition(s) sail conditions ( really roll and look out or put in a clause that the owner will mend and clean) roller furling -- the Schaeffer 3100 tend to "freeze up" Anchor size, chain and rode condition sole condition box spring or old mattresses refrigeration system -- is it working Just some of what should be reviewed..... be with the surveyor..... that should be part of the deal. A good surveyor will take his time, it will be an all day affair or more and you can be down there taking notes on the boat. Cathy |

There is little argument about the value of a survey when buying a used boat. However, the original question was in regard to a brand new boat straight out of the factory.
I have never heard of an insurance company that required a survey on a factory-new boat. Do you know of any? The only significance purpose of a survey on a new boat is to find factory defects that might go undetected for a long time, but would still cause a problem some time in the future. Perhaps even on a future survey when the boat is sold. Most of the other items listed would not be worth surveying on a new boat. Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870 |

Generally I would say it's not required and would add additional expense for little value when you're already writing checks to everybody in sight.
One caveat. If you're new to larger cruising boats or heading off on a bluewater passage soon after taking delivery, a good surveyer can help you decide what things over and above "standard production processes" you might want to or should do early in your ownership. In that case, I'd recommend a good surveyor and a partial survey focused on potential upgrades, modifications and possible factory/commissioning quality "escapes." For most of your equipment and accessories, it's not Catalina, but the accessory manufacturer who warranties the product. We're pretty lucky. Catalina dealers are very good about being the middle man for warranty issues. Larry Melelana Catalina 42 # 175 1990 3cbn, wk Solomons MD |
