I purchased my 1989 three cabin 2 years ago in Norfolk, VA.
As in the Movie 'Willie Wonka' in the words of Gene Wilder "Little surprises around each corner, but none to dangerous". Check the rudder for large blisters at the very bottom. If you find one and rupture it, you may find enough water inside to wask out a six inch deep gully under the rudder, in the sand. Then further check to see if you find rusty discoloration at the top of the exposed rudder post. If so, you may need to grind the fiberglass to the honeycomb core and re-glass. Next check the rudder stop and look carefully for cracks in both sectors. (Missed on survey) Both sectors may need replaced. All of this forementioned cost about $1500 to repair and replace. Next, Check the oil/water cooler for signs of leakage and corrosion if you find it that will be about $600.00 to replace. Check the water heater for massive corrosion and leakage. To replace that you must remove the exhaust riser and pass the heater over the engine and replace with the new water heater, That will be about $1800. Change the oil and impeller. Sniff for a "foul odor" in the starboard aft cabin. (Raise the cushions) You may need to "Blast out "the aft holding tank, replace all head hoses and macerator. You should not have to replace the holding tank, That's about $400.00. Check the forward holding tank for the same reasons. Check the inside paneling and the shelf area for water stains. We found genoa track nuts twisted off in order to stop the leaking. When the track was lifted to check for the leak we found a hold drilled in the wrong place at manufacture, never corrected or sealed, and for 15 years it leaked behind the paneling.(main salon, port side, forward, closest to bulkhead). Check the windless. The cap may need torqued, the original tool is too long to work properly and must be cut to work. Once that is done all works well.
Plan to replace the Jabso shower sump pumps with whaler gushers, about $ 120. each. Check shower pump switches for corrosion and replace if necessary. Propane tank will need a new lid to accomodate the new higher style tank. Seward has the part. @ $ 69.00.

Be sure you can locate the emergency tiller. Be sure you can access the connection point. We needed a hammer and a screwdriver arrangement to turn the access plate, proper lube and all is well. The rest will go quite easy. Major repairs took about 3 months, the rest is sweat equity. We launch mid April, and look forward to a wonderful sailing season with the standard amount of TLC. Good luck...don't let this scare you...get a good survey and look around carefully, ask questions, check maintence manuals, repair records..cover all you bases. A catalina 42 is a great vessel.

Are you purchasing "Second Wind"?, if so I know this boat, I've been on it and wanted to purchase her several years ago.
I know where it was in charter, and she is a beautiful vessel.
I responded not to long ago to you first request to buying a "1989 catalina 42". My ordeal was a bit involved, but "Troubador " is afloat this date, and a great pleasure to own and operate.
