I'm planning a cruise to SF this summer and would like to include the delta. Can anyone recommend a cruising guide or website(s) with info?

Rick,
Hal Schell did cruising guide years ago but he's been dead now for several years. Probably the best website is: http://www.californiadelta.org/deltatides.htm So much of delta knowledge is local. I've been going to the delta for close to 30 years & pretty much know every nook & crannie. I don't know when you're going to be in SF Bay but the best times for the delta are from late July on through September... after labor day, the place is deserted. The water is fresh, and enjoyable to be in on a lazy hot August day. Anyway, give me a timeline on how much time you would like to stay in the delta, & I can give you some suggestions. Remember, in the delta, there are 3 kinds of boats, those that have run aground, those that haven't, and damn liars :-).

Rodney's right, but usually you only see the second kind of boats when they're on their way into the Delta!
Rick, if you can stand a huge crowd of boats and your visit is timed right, there is a great fireworks show for the 4th of July at Mandeville Tip off the San Joaquin River, compliments of Hilton Hotels. For that matter, standing on your cabin top you can also see fireworks shows from several cities in the surrounding flat Delta area. I have a great tip for anyone planning to stay out anchored in the Delta -- first go to Costco or Sam's Club and buy the biggest "floating island" blow-up raft you can find and a small air compressor. In fact, bring all the floaty toys you can carry. We go to the Delta every year and these photos were taken last summer http://www.gallery.me.com/azure42#100097

Thanks for the responses. I'm looking at early July thru early August for this cruise. And I was hoping to not go into any really shallow channels.
I've looked the area over on the electronic charts but they don't reflect any changing sandbars etc. I checked the website but it would be nice to have
a hard copy to take along if it exists.

Rick, I live on the delta in a little waterfront town called Discovery Bay. If you want paper charts ahead of time, and I recommend a delta map (which has all
the marinas, anchorages, watering holes, etc. I can mail them to you if you get me your address. Latitute38.com web site often has info on the delta in the
summer and Stockton Sailing Club has a decent site and great Friday night dinners. Most places you can go and not deal with bridges or running aground, other
places both are a problem. Local knowlege and planning help. Contact me thru this site or call 510-918-0515,
