While painting the bottom, my hubby noticed a 4 inch gouge in the keel. I think we hit a rock when some mooring operators had us go up to a mooring during our
club's big summer cruise. It was a hit at about 2-3 kts so it was not a hard hit that might affect the keel bolts.... I dont think, but wonder what others
have done to make repairs ?

Cathy,
Use Bondo and then fair it. Check the joint where the keel attaches to the stump and make sure it hasn't started to get the "smile".

I have experimented with running into various types of underwater obstructions, and found that the mass of the wing keel absorbs much of the punishment without
passing on the damage. Look in the bilge - carefully inspect things for cracks - if you see none - you haven't done any damage. Look for a bigger rock and
try again. . The previous post mentions "bondo" - good stuff

Hi Cathy. Welcome back.
You should be fine. Check the keel bolts as Gary said, but shouldn't be a big deal. Lead is pretty ductile. Use a wire brush on a drill to remove all traces of bottom paint around the damage. Wear a dust mask. Lead is nasty stuff in your lungs. Tap gently with a hammer to form the lead back so that there are no raised edges. Mix up some 3M vinylester fairing putty (expensive marine Bondo). Wire brush again and immediately apply the putty. Fair with 80 grit, coat with epoxy resin and repaint. Melelana was bumped into the cradle one winter and gouged the keel. I did the above repair 7 years ago and you can't find the damage.
