Has anyone re-rigged the outhaul for a MkII? My outhaul line that exits the forward end of the boom is too short to lead to the cockpit, which I would like to
do. Rather than splice an extension onto the existing tail, I thought I could just reave a longer new line. With the new line attached to the tail I pulled
the outhaul wire out of the aft boom end, and was suprised to find a 4 part tackle attached with a fiddle block and one (I think) single block residing inside
of the boom. Apparently the dead end is tied off internally at the forward end of the boom and I can see the rivets for the internal pad eye. It seems to me
that the only way to replace this line is to remove the gooseneck fitting by drilling out the rivets to gain access to the forward end of the boom. Am I
missing something, is there another way, or should I just splice it? Seems like there should be a way to check these blocks and change the rope.

Bob, I recently removed my outhaul block and tackle with a single line, low stretch, running from the clew, around the aft sheave, forward and around the
forward sheave, down to the mast base and back to the cockpit. I found inside the boom was a double block with a fiddle at the aft end of the outhaul line with
the bitter end tied to the fiddle. This is apparently different from what you have. The line went from the fiddle, forward to a single block attached to the
fwd end of the boom, back thru the double block, back forward and out thru the fwd sheave.
I decided to replace the outhaul block system because in a race recently the blocks got stuck and wouldn't allow me to loosen or tighten the outhaul on my new loose footed main. Since I plan to use the winch to tighten the outhaul, the loss of advantage in the outhaul line by removing the blocks shouldn't be a problem. I think the only way to get access to the front of the boom is to drill out the rivets and drive the end off the boom, probably not an easy job. Good luck.

Bob,
I had a similar mess inside the boom on my 1993. The original line was a multi purchase schaffer fiddle and becket with the forward purchase attached to the inside of the boom. I am guessing this is to give a mechanical advantage for use without the winch. My out haul was run aft and the blocks left in place inside the boom. The blocks had bottomed out against each other and turned into a big hatchet knot. I removed everything from inside the boom and ran one new high tech low stretch line aft to the cockpit through a clutch. The winch is more than enough power to trim the out haul. my reef lines now also run into the end of the boom then forward to the mast to exit and then aft to clutches.
