I changed the oil and filter on my cat 42, and put four quarts back in. This brought the oil level on the stick to approx. 1/4 inch above the lower level. The manual says 2.5/7 liters. Previous owner said that he replaced with four quarts. Should I be using more oil and bringing the level to the top mark on the stick?

I use about 1.5 gallons of Rotella when I change oil. My engine is the 4JH2E 50 hp Yanmar. 7 liters is slightly more than 1.5 gallons.
