Radar Cable Replacement

Posts: 55 06/14/07 08:20:45	Tags : None Lost by Randome yesterday while out sailing yesterday. Fell to the deck. Wondering if the cable can be replaced with the mast up? Has anyone had the opportunity to try and pull a new cable using the old one to pull? The other option is to try and put a new connector on the old cable but looks like a tough task in the air. I have been told that pulling the cable out may not be possilble because of the way it exits the mast and then turns to enter the area where it is connected.

Posts: 147 06/14/07 08:31:41	FWIW, I pulled my wind instrument wire out and put it back with the help of a rigger and it was no problem to do. Pulled it back through in less than 10 minutes. I suspect your radar wire is a little thicker but with experienced help it ought to be doable. The messenger line conncection is the key; it must be dependable and as small as possible. We each had a handheld radio so we could coordinate pushing and pulling. Good Luck... James White Star #450 Puerto Vallarta

Posts: 224 06/14/07 11:13:11	We had a similar incident with our Raymarine Radar Dome. We were tacking in 22 knots of wind during a WetWednesday race and the dome came crashing on deck, took one bounce and fell into the water. It turned out that the mount failed and simply sheared. There was visible oxidation and it appeared to be defectively cast. The mount and the dome were less than 1 year old at the time and Raymarine replaced them under warranty. To your question, we found it easiest to splice in a new connector on the existing wire. Our rigger was able to do the job, no problem. Raymarine provided the connector as part of the unit.
