Greetings -- I'm interested in purcharsing a 42-2 MkII and, because I also race in a round-the-bouys evening race association, I'm interetsed in adding a chute to the package. Can anyone tell me what's involved, how much gear I'll need to add and a rough estimate of costs involved? (I know how much the sail would cost -- just talking about gear here.)

If you're purchasing a new one it's all set up for it, I assume even a use one is too. I got an asymetrical with my new C42, the mast comes set up well; ability for 2 main halyards, 2 jib halyards and 2 spinaker. the top of the mast has port and Stb. "u bolts" to attach blocks for the spinaker halyards. if you want it, you'll have to add a track for the pole, if you need it.

For racing, you'll do better with a symmetrical rather than an assym. Our boats are a little heavy to make good use of the hotter reaching angles. Assym is simple to rig (as mentioned by Codge) and great for cruising or when the course is a tighter reach.
16'5" carbon pole will be around 1300. Aluminum in that length is really heavy and costs nearly as much. Mast fitting around 300. You'll need a pole lift and control lines for the inboard end and a down guy (recommend rigged for 2:1). Cost depends on who does it and how fancy you go. Garhauer makes a nice double turning block. I estimate about $2500 if you do the work yourself. Add about a day's labor ($75/hr here) if you have it done. Good luck, Larry Melelana, US 93280 Catalina 42 #175. 3 cbn, wk |

FYI if you have isomat mast( as most 42's) go to their site, all you need is a car for the pole (Sym),their block system for raising and lowering,(sym) a pole. if you are asym, atn snuffer and tacker and you are set.
