Cat's Paw, 1998 C42mkII (hull no. 627), was commissioned with two internal headsail halyards. One of the two mast entries for these internal headsail halyards is marked "spinnaker halyard" on the Charleston Spars (Isomat?) mast. I don't recall the configuration at the masthead, but are the two internal headsail halyards lead differently at the masthead crane so that one of these two halyards is more appropriate for raising an assymetrical spinnaker?

The headsail halyards are supposed to be for jibs, they will chaff if used for a spinaker. Look about 3 to 4 feet down from the mast head on the sides of the mast and there should be a outlet for spinaker halyard (1 port and 1 Stb) with and eye strap fairlead. my dealer told me if I don't use the spinaker too much the jib halyards may be o.k. but they WILL chaff

Yes, the halyard marked Spinnaker is run thru a block attached to a forward bail/crane which is "outside" and forward of the masthead sheave which is used for your jib halyard. This configuration diminishes the possibility of it interfering with the forestay.

There are two separate questions here.
First, how does the masthead look on YOUR boat? The spar business has been marked with bankruptcies and mergers over the past few years. At one time, around 1997 or 1998, Catalina was using masts from two suppliers at the same time. The configurations were similar, but not identical. Assuming there is actually a difference between the two halyards at the masthead, other than merely port and starboard, the next question is how you plan to deploy the chute. It is traditional that the spinnaker halyard is the one that is higher or further forward. This allows jibing in the usual manner in front of the boat, without tangling the halyard around the forestay. However, some people complete the jibe by snuffing the chute and then "tacking" it through the fore triangle. In this case the non-tangling halyard arrangement might be to use the inner or lower halyard for the spinnaker. In some cases there may be more of an issue with chafe when using one halyard as compared to the other. Again, you need to look specifically at your boat configuration. I have hull No. 618 which should be very similar to your No. 627. The mast is by Charleston Spars and does not have a spinnaker crane although there are cutouts for the halyard. A few years back I talked to Charleston Spars about modifications needed for an asymmetrical. They said I needed a masthead "spinnaker crane" which they no longer (at that time) included on the stock masts for the Catalina 42. One can be ordered from them which they assured me was a simple "bolt on" attachment to the masthead plate. Unfortunately, it's still on my wish list. Also, the "simple" installment sounds too simple to be real as it may necessitate movement of other masthead mounted gear. You should give Charleston Spars (in SC) a call.
