I have just purchased a SL upgrade for my hood furling system and need to obtain a line to operate it. I have done a bit of research on the various companies available, but for this application it seems like stretch is less of an issue than a halyard. As always, I am searching for the best combination of value and performance. Any suggestions on the type if line and where to purchase it would be appreciated.

On my Hood furler, the furling line is double braided line and has the core removed from the portion of the line that actually rolls on the drum. This is a common practice by many riggers and it helps to prevent overrides on the drum by lessening the build up of too much line on the drum. This probably increases the stretch in the line when under load, but it has not been a problem for me. The core is not removed from the portion of the line that doesn't roll on the drum, so you can get a good grip on it or put it on a winch. I believe the line is 3/8 Sta-set yacht braid. Gerry: Man, you are full of information. Are you pretty sure that 3/8" will work? Also, any info on decoring the line?

Agree with Gerry. On Melelana (# 175), I have 3/8 double braid with a stripped core. To strip the core, tie a knot it the end you're leaving whole and milk the cover back from the other end to expose the core. Continue to slide the cover back (it bunches up as you slide it back). Once you've exposed the amount of core you want to remove, just cut the core. Pull the cover back over to bury the core and stretch it tight. You do significantly reduce the strength of the line (by slightly more than 50% as Sta-set strength is about 50/50 cover & core. Than would still leave a tensile strength of more than 2000 pounds. A stronger but much more expensive answer is either a high tech single braid in a smaller diameter that's hard on the hands or a high tech line with a polyester cover added to the part you touch to give it a better "hand". Custom riggers will make those up for a price. I've worried about the strength, but mine looked pretty old when I bought the boat 4 years ago and it is still working fine. I suspect it's there from the initial delivery in 1990. If you assume a 6 inch diameter drum and a 2 inch diameter foil, it would take a pull of more than 6,000 pounds on the sail to reach the tensile strength of the line. Maximum genoa sheet loads for our boats are less than 3500 lbs (Harken specs out genoa leads/blocks for our boats at that level). Good luck, larry Melelana Catalina 42 #175, 3cbn, wk |

Hi Scott,
I live in Potomac, Maryland which is a suburb of Washington, D.C. The boat is a 1989 3-cabin, wing keel, hull number 108. I keep it in a small marina in Annapolis, MD. I bought the boat two years ago. It is loaded with gear, including a 4kw genset, reverse cycle air conditioning, radar on a Questus mount, Raymarine chart plotter and radar, Martec feathering prop, PYI dripless shaft seal and flexible shaft coupling, full canvas enclosure including both plastic and screens, Raritan Electric head and a LectraSan waste system, and lots of little things. It had two autopilots and Navico instruments that I replaced with a Raymarine 6000 and a new set of ST-60 instruments. I also added a new bow roller from Garhauer and a Fortress FX-37 anchor, a Forespar Novalift outboard motor lift, a gas-water seperator on the genset exhaust, new cockpit cushions, and I stripped and varnished the exterior teak and the entire interior of the boat. The previous owners maintained it well. The boat looks great, works great, sails great, and doesn't show any of its age. As you might guess, I'm an avid do-it-yourselfer. Gerry "Ragtime" |

Thanks to both of you for your replys. A couple more questions.
1. How many feet do I need to order for my '42, and how many feet should I core? 2. How do you handle the cleating of the line at the cockpit? I previously owner a 32' Benneteau racer that had a pulley/jam cleat mounted behind the winch. Worked great and allowed me to reef under sail pressure with great precision. Scott |
