Posts: 53 11/14/05 18:08:29	Tags : None Hull #855 came with a 155% Catalina furling headsail. I'm in the process of readying for a Bahamas trip Fall of 2006 and have heard the winds can blow steadly 20 Knots +. When beating in these force winds on the Chesapeake I reef the jib to ease the heel on the boat. The shape of the semi-furled jib is wrinkled and the airfoil shape is pretty much in question. Has anyone had the pads sown in the luff that are supposed to give the furled sail a better foil shape? In short, does it work? What kind of cost can I expect from a sailmaker? Posts: 246 11/14/05 20:24:37	The luff pad will make for a smooth furl, however reducing the sail by 10-15% is the best you can do even with the foam luff and still have any performance. You may be better served to secure an extra jib 90-110% or so for heavy blows.

Posts: 96 11/15/05 10:33:38	JBMASON is right. I have pads and they do help, but only to a point. I too, am on the Chesapeake, and the winds in the Bahamas are very different. I've sailed both places. I have a 135% that is loaded all of the time we're out of the Chesapeake. We go to New England in the summer, and the 135 works well. I have a 155% that I got with the boat (from Catalina) and rarely use it. I also wouldn't go south with only one headsail. What happens if... Posts: 37 11/15/05 11:50:30	I have this "soft" luff as they call it in europe and it is not perfect but better than without. One thing that does improve sail shape particularly upwind either reefed or not ,is to make sure you have plenty of halyard tension on. I wind on this to the point of just getting upward creases in the luff. this helps to flatten the sail and de power it. Hope this helps. chris garraway --JOLINI -- Malta

Posts: 131 11/15/05 12:41:01	If you can afford it, buy a 135% jenoa. I've sailed to the Bahamas several times in late spring and with a few exceptions a 135% is perfect sail. If you're going to the Bahamas in the fall, you'll be reefing the 155% a lot. I was in Great Stirrup Cay this past weekend and had a steady 30 Knts of wind - normal for this time of the year. Posts: 146 11/15/05 13:39:10	We only use the 135,and have left it as such up to about 25-28 knts, it does reef down to "about" 110 and holds it's shapefairly well, we used a 150 on the C34 and for offshore used a 90 when it puffed up. Bite the bullet and go for a 135. Dave Common Sense #810

Posts: 23 11/15/05 15:44:27	On San Francisco bay I can get by with the 135%. Reefing it down can work pretty well but it still gets to much belly. In the bigger winds you want to flatten the sail, not give it more belly. (I have a rope in the luff insead of pad. The pad tends to compress) Taking the wife out with freinds or clients, I needed a smaller jib. I just purchaced a used 90 percent kevlar sail in excelent condition for $395.00. The clew will need moved up higher on the leach due to the location of the track and block. Has anyone added additional track forward, to position the block correctly for shorter footed sails?

Posts: 391 11/15/05 17:10:45	Chris, I have a second set of short tracks for my 90% jib's sheet-cars forward by the shrouds. I use the regular tracks and cars aft when I have the big boy, the 155% up. Since it sounds like you're ported in Alameda or Oakland, you're very welcome to come by the boat to see how they are mounted and, probably more important, fastened below the deck. Posts: 53 11/15/05 18:24:24	Thank you all!!!! After reading the comments and speaking with several sailmakers today, I ordered a new 120%. The reason I went with the even smaller sail (than 135%) is I am a geriatric sailor and enjoy being comfortable in 20+ knot winds. I'll use the 155% in the Chesapeake in the summer and the 120% in the Bahamas. Also, GREAT ADVICE about having a backup jib. I don't know if I have enough room to carry the 155% on the trip. Perhaps I will also get a used 100% jib somewhere. Are there any suggestions for brokers that deal in used sails?

Posts: 96 11/16/05 06:35:21	Royalserf, I have the two cabin centerline and I can easily store a sail under the centerline bed. There's lots of room under there. For a used sail, try Bacons in Annapolis. They have tons of used sails - all kinds, makes, and condition. They are located in Parole just off West Street.

This smaller sail has a foot about 8' shorter than the 135%. Adding 4' would still make it necessary to raise the clew quite a bit. I would like to see your set up or at least photo's of it. My e-mail is chris@cabuilders.com. Has anyone thought about putting the shorter tracks on the decktop. I have seen the Catalina 400 as well as other boats, with the tracks there. I'm afraid these don't show the tracks very well -- I was taking the photos of something else and they're the only ones I can find now. We'll be on the boat the week of 12/03 - 12/11 and I'll take some good photos, including below deck fasteners.
