I am considering replacing the main halyard. It has been repaired once and is now very stiff.
I have heard that it should be replaced with one size smaller, stronger line. Would appreciated hearing from you folks with your advice and experience. Thanks |

I'm a big believer in high tech line for halyards. Basic double braid (Sta-Set, etc) is very stretchy on a relative basis when compared to the alternatives. A stretchy halyard allows the luff to ease in response to wind gusts, allowing draft to increase and move aft - exactly what you don't want.
I replaced both main and genoa halyards with 10 mm New England Ropes T-900 3 years ago and am very happy with the result. The smaller diameter is fine and the difference in stretch from stock is pretty impressive. The newer Endura Braid has even less stretch than the T-900 and has a softer "hand." One warning. On Melelana (#175, 1990) I found a tendancy for the line to slip through the clutch due to it's smaller diameter and firmer finish. I fixed that by milking back the cover and "bulking up" the core by inserting 2 sections of 1/8" cord in the area clamped by the clutch at full hoist and at each reef. I too have changed to T-900 for my main halyard and am very happy with it. The 10mm works better on the blocks and masthead sheaves too.
