My apologies in advance for cross posting, but I thought the general forum might get a little bit more exposure. My wife and I currently sail a C-320 "Second Star" and we love our boat. One of our goals is to do some cruising aroud the Caribbean and perhaps farther in our own boat. While Second Star is absolutley perfect for Lake Ontario, we are looking for something larger and more robust for blue water sailing. Since we have been delighted with our C-320 naturally we are considering Catalina as a candidate for our next larger, liveaboard, long range cruiser type boat. What is your opinion on the C42 as a boat for extended cruising? I am particularly interested in your opinions and observations regarding hull durability, strength of the rigging and the handling in heavy weather. Posts: 317 02/10/06 17:45:08	Hi Addison, We lived and cruised aboard our C42 for two years. The only reason we stopped was my wife received a request asking her to come out of retirement as CEO at her old company. We loved our boat and will return to cruising when my wife finally gets this silly idea about working out of her system. I can say with some pride (and a lot of bias) that our boat was the prefect cruising boat for a couple -- unless you're a millionaire....then I could suggest some other boats, but it's gonna cost you. It was very often the case that our boat became a social center in the bays and harbors where we anchored. This wasn't necessarily due to my charm as a host, but was more a function of our having one of the most comfortable boats for group gatherings -- either in the cockpit or down below. We were cautious cruisers, with no schedules to keep and so we avoided making passages in heavy weather whenever possible. The rare times we were caught by storms, the boat comfortably handled 10-foot seas and sustained upper 30 knot wind with 45+ gusts. I can't say that we enjoyed those days, but we never felt threatened or doubtful that the boat couldn't take it. C42s sail well and have a kindly sea motion in rough waters. I would suggest that for marital harmony you equip the boat to be as comfortable as possible -- my wife was adamant that she wouldn't "go camping on water" A generator, water maker, good entertainment system, etc. aren't absolute requirements, but they do go a long way to promoting a happy wife/crew/guests. I would also suggest upgrading some things to make cruising more convenient and safer....having radar/GPS, a good planing dinghy with a reliable, strong outboard motor, and strong, oversized ground tackle are a good start Rod Williams Azure, #343, 2-cabin Alameda/San Francisco Bay, CA.

Posts: 29 02/12/06 10:06:10	Hi Addison, We're currently in Mexico on our C42 MKII after sailing down here from Victoria, Canada. We're off to Hawaii next month. With a previous owner our boat, Salacia, has also travelled the South Pacific to Australia. We're pleased with the performance and heavy weather handling. We would like better sea berths. Our C42 has had quite a few modifications such as in inner forestay, extra standing rigging, extra stainless handholds, etc. If you want details on the major mods go to www.salacia.ca and to the photo album. The first album details the upgrades. Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions. Overall, we are pleased with our choice. I raced a lot back home and so wanted a boat that would perform well on all points of sail. My C42 gives me that. If I was going to spend my time rounding Cape Horn I would probably have chosen differently. They say that 95% of time while cruising is spent at anchor. We've found that to generally true. A liveable boat was very important to me. The excellent galley, comfortable and roomy berths, and huge cockpit have proven themselves very valuable. Enjoy your hunt for a new boat! Posts: 153 05/24/06 04:25:35	Just a quick note to update this thread. My wife and I are the pround owners of a new to us 1999 C-42 MkII Pullman. Even though it is a 1999 the boat has been very lightly used, <160 hrs on engine and <381 miles on bottom. We took delivery just this past Saturday 5/20/06 and we are still in the process of figuring out where everything is, or will go. Compared to our C-320, which we loved, this boat is a castle. I can't believe we've actually spent a weekend on board, and we are not covered with the bumps and bruises from finding out the hardway where the corners and low spots are!!. And so it begins....... Posts: 105 05/25/06 08:14:07	Here is my 2 cents worth. My previous boat was a Catalina 36 (Hull#215 which I sailed from Vancouver BC to Long Beach CA. We went through all types of weather including a gale near Cape Blanco. Even though I was terrified at times (I am a timid soul) the boat was built strong enough to handle the weather. That confidence, in the Catalina line, led me to buy the present boat - our Catalina 42 - after taking delivery in Seattle we sailed the boat back to its slip in Sidney BC. During this trip we encountered 35 knot winds on the beam. I was even more impressed how the 42 handled the short choppy seas and how smooth she sailed as compared to the previous boat. I never once had to worry about our breakable items down below. She cut through the seas smoothly sometimes hitting 8 knots (GPS). We took some green water over the bow, but the Catalina Hart Top dodger took that. For the price - you can't do better than a Catalina and I feel that the 42 is the best of the bunch. Posts: 119 05/26/06 04:55:22	Congratulations! The 42 is a great boat. There is a "bump and bruise" you will eventually find. Assuming you have a two cabin model, the pantry storage aft of the galley is wondferful, just remember to duck when you go there and don't stand up too soon. I've fixed the problem by adding some padding, so it doesn't hurt as much. Fair winds. Bob #776
