I have recently purchased a 1999 42' catalina Mark 2. We have noticed that the galley sink is slow to drain. Upon inspection I noticed that the sink outlet is below the water line. That seems to me to be a problem right there. The outlet hose would always have some salt water in it. We have managed to get around this problem by cupping a hand over the sink drain and pushing down (kind of a plunger action). This seems to get the water flowing. Has anyone else experienced this?

Draining out the bottom of the boat is better than to one of the sides. As long as the sink in near midship, draining out the bottom keeps water from coming in when on a heal. I do not have any problems draining the sink, its not as fast as a home drain, but it works just fine.
Perhaps you have a clog or a barnacle at the exit hole. |

Charlie, we keep a small plunger on board for this purpose. It has served us well. If you look at the drain hose under the sink there isn't much slope, so any food that goes down sometimes gets suspended in that area and slows down the flow. It doesn't take much to free the line up. Good luck.

Thanks for your help. I think as much as anything, it is good to hear from other owners that this is a normal situation. I like the idea of the mini plunger!!

One of the next cool upgrades I am doing is to replace the existing 90 degree fitting that connect the two sink drains with a vertical from the starboard drain and a tee that comes in from the port further down.
This solves the yucky boilup when you dump junk in one sink and it transfers to the other prior to draining out. I got this idea from Tom Hawkins on Liberty at the latest C-42 rendezvous in the San Juans. S/V Jah Mon,1994, Mark I,Hull #428,Two Cabin,Fin Keel,Anacortes, WA,Puget Sound PHRF 122
