Can you share with me the size of your yacht ensign ? Do you fly a 2' x 3' or do you go larger on your C42 ?
Do you use the Catalina holder or a special mount ?

I use a 2'x3' in the Catalina mount. It's pretty noisy and sailing downwind anyone sitting in the stern seat gets smacked.

I believe the flag length is supposed to be 1" for every foot of length of the vessel. So we should have a 42" flag.

I read about that "rule" of 1 inch per length in the West Marine book. I just went out and purchased a 2' x 3' for this old teak staff that we had.
I am now electing to position a 7/8 West Marine stern rail mount on top of the horizontal tube on our davits.... and fly the ensign off of that. My hubby has been uncomfortable not having a flag on this boat of ours. But the tubes of our RIB dingy would smack any staff in that Catalina mount. So, he's getting it for his bday. I just hope he likes it. I have had to sand down the 1.25 staff to 7/8s -- how much fun is that. Cathy |

In continuing the thought about flag size, 1" of fly for every foot of boat length is correct. I have read if that size is not available, round up to the nearest size. I fly a 30x48".
Regarding the pole, I had Garhauer make a stainless pole. Since there is no teak in the cockpit (MarkII), I opted with a 1" stainless flag pole, matches the stern pulpit. I expect they could make a 7/8" pole if asked. Fits in the Catalina mount perfect. Garhauer tapered the top, looks great. I understand they can actually place a stainless ball on the top, like the teak poles. Garhauer welded a SS shackel on the top & have a SS shackel on a movable sleeve for the bottom attachment to the flag. This way, as the nylon flag stretches, the sleve (with 2 set-screws) can be pulled down to keep it tight. I could take a photo if anyone would like. ~~~~_/)~~~~

I fly the 48" flag on the stern and it looks nicely sized...

BTW: When I buy a new flag, I sew three or four rows of zig-zag stitches along the far end of the flag. When I replace the flag, it is because it is fades, not frayed. Ernie April |
