Posts: 27 01/23/06 17:16:03	Tags : None Going down wind in the beer can races in non spinaker class, I am getting trounced. Upwind, the boat holds her own. Almost everyone else uses a whisker pole setup downwind. I would appreciate any ideas regarding whisker pole size, and onboard storage. I have been looking at a 3 inch diamater forespar 12-22 feet line adjustable. The local phrf is 1.4 x J. Forespar recommends this pole only up to 36 feet loa boat. The next size up is way more money. Will this pole work in San Diego type sailing in lite to moderate wind? Or do I need to go larger, and to 3 1/2 inch? Also, can a whisker pole be used as a spinnaker pole if I go that route in the future? On another subject, I have a 140 genoa and the local phrf allow a 155 without penalty. If anybody has a 155, does it make a difference for you? Again, lite to moderate winds in San Diego. Thanks for all the help. John, 674 Windcatcher

Posts: 23 01/23/06 17:44:47	Get the bigger pole, I bent the smaller pole two times on a Catalina 34. By the time you extend it out to support a 155%, it will need all the strength it can get. Look at the wieght, the bigger pole is heavy. I believe they offer it with a carbon fiber extenstion. If I had it to do agian I would spend the extra money on the carbon fiber. Posts: 323 01/23/06 18:09:11	John, I second the larger pole comment. If you get the aluminum/carbon pole, it doesn't add much weight and is great insurance. I don't recommend using a whisker pole as a spin pole, although I've been known to do it....bent a whisker pole on my last boat that way. Anything above a deep reach places the pole in compression and the whisker pole isn't made for that. I've used a whisker pole with an assy when running DDW in light stuff, but life gets interesting fast if the wind pipes up or you get headed and the run turns to a reach. Posts: 209 01/23/06 19:38:45	In the limited racing I have done, I found that we were not competitive when the winds were under 9 knots. At 12 knots, then she sailed well enough to overcome the handicap. Over 13 knots then we sailed real well. Moving the fairleads makes a difference. Going downwind I move the fairlead forward. Experiment for the best position for each wind condition. On a close reach I keep the fairleads fairly far back. After you get a wisker pole it would be nice to hear how much it helps improve your performance. I've been considering buying one. I recently participated in a pre-race seminar where they were promoting tacking down wind - like the spinnaker guys do. While you are traveling a greater distance, increased boat speed should make up the difference. I don't remember the formula, but the bottom line was if you elect to tack down wind, your speed needs to be greater than 1.4 times your down wind speed to make up the difference in distance. PHRF now has, at least here in sw Florida, a true cruising rating where amoung other things they will take into account the size of your headsail. Bob 776 2 cbn cl

Posts: 250 01/25/06 09:46:19	Gary (and Bob), West Florida PHRF issues ratings for "True Cruisers" that are intended to take into consideration the extra weight and windage typically found on cruising boats. Our rating in this class is an embarrassingly high 156 for WL courses and 147 for random leg courses. The rating would be even higher if we were not penalized 6 seconds for sails that are less than three years old. (Original factory sails, including 155% headsail) In the end, the high ratings do no good, since the competition has similarly outlandish ratings. For example a local Beneteau 38 has a rating of 206, a Hunter 41 has a rating of 174, a Hunter 42 has a rating of 190, and so on. Some of these boats have roller furling mainsails, but there is a whole list of items that are credited for extra handicap. Some are really silly, like 1 second for an extra 10 pound propane tank. Most boats carry far more weight in beer. Back to the original topic, we have a Forespar 12-22 LC whisker pole. It is a leftover from a previous boat, and it is clearly too small for a C42. Posts: 76 01/25/06 10:39:23	In my opinion a 155% is the best sail to have in southern california. If you already have the 140% the 155% will really increase boat performance, upwind and downwind. The lighter the pole the better it is because it is less fatiguing on the crew. I agree with the boat being a poor performer in wind less than 7-8knts. Another performance booster is the replacement of the original fixed 3 blade prop, get a feathering or folding prop and you will never look back. Tom Maxwell #766

Regarding the 155, does anyone have recommendations for a sail loft from which to purchase one. Posts: 76 01/25/06 22:46:39	The 155% that I had made for our boat was done by Ullman Sails in Newport Beach, CA. It is a high cut 155, meaning it is just below the upper life line when sheeted in. It is meant tobe used as a roller furler sail. I have seen a great improvement over the original roller furler headsail supplied by the factory. I am considering a deck sweeper 155% just for racing but havn't been convinced that it would be better than what I have. I am thinking my next purchase will be a new main, seeing as how I just got a new spinaker and the headsail is still doing well.
