Posts: 37 04/22/06 00:49:41	Tags : None Thinking of replacing the Lewmar 40 ST Halliard/ Reefing Winch with an electric model --either Lewmar or Harken. Whilst we find the 42 easy to handle, my wife and I struggle a bit with such a heavy ( fully battened Mainsail) . Any comments from other members who may have made the changeover would be welcome. Posts: 310 04/22/06 16:40:08	I will head up to the mast and pull the halyard from up there and then we purchased a drill and can raise the rest from the cockpit. I find its easier each year, or maybe I am getting used to it --- or perhaps stronger ??? Cathy in CT

Posts: 58 04/22/06 20:26:09	We had an electric winch installed as part of original equipment on Fortune Cookie, our Mark I 3-cabin. I saw a Hunter 37 that had one and thought "what a good idea,." We raise the main more often than the anchor, and have power for the anchor rode, so why not for the main halyard? Since then, my wife can send me up the mast...non-sailors we take out with us ask if I need any help setting sail, and I can say "Yes.. push that button, please".....I have also used it to furl the genoa under load, trimming the main... and finally, if I ever need it, it would be just the thing to use with the lifesling to bring a MOB back on board. I have been told by others on this list that an extension is needed because the deck is so thick. If you check below, you will probably see posts relating to this subject. Posts: 115 04/25/06 04:45:49	I agree with Cathy in CT. Jump the halyard from the mast and have someone in the cockpit take up the slack. Use the winch to finish the job. I have a hard time justifying the amp draw from electric winches. The anchor windlass is bad enough. Bob 776

Posts: 51 04/26/06 09:17:33	Their is a winchbit for a 1/2'' right angle (milwaukee) cordless drill.I am waiting for the 28 volt model.I have sailed on 50' boats equiped with this set-up and it works fine(currently using 18 volt) Go to winchbit.com.It is much cheaper than changing over to electric and super handy for all your winch needs.Good Luck Steve Leshner, #386,"Batucada" Marina Del Rey,Ca.
