I have a 1989, hull # 123. I checked out the Craftsmans Corner and saw David McCaulleys # hull 52 and it looks like he removed his mirror in the forward shower and installed a cabinet door that opens into the underside of the anchor locker. There seems to be an amazing amount of space in there. Norm Perron Hull # 600 put a Bowmar hatch under the shower seat with a nice storage space. Will I find the same space available in my 42?

Gene, looks like you did your homework. I'm not familiar with the MK 1, so have no info for you. If you have a shower seat, you may have the room under the seat for a hatch. LOTS of room there & stays dry.

You're right -- there is a lot of storage available in the forepeak. My 1992 came with a cabinet door behind the mirror -- we keep a ton of gear stowed here, including our diving equipment (fins, goggles, etc) and two Stearns inflatable kayaks. Rod Williams

If you haven't done so yet...remove the mirror (the teak strips on each side of the mirror) and you'll find a hardboard covered opening. Remove that and you'll be looking at the anchor locker and, at the upper right, the windlass motor and cables.
Lots of space to add shelves and other storage containers. And yes, under the seat it's hollow. MJK Splash Dancer II, #94 |

This is a path you'll need to beat sooner or later anyway, as you'll need to get to the backside of the foot switch for the windlass. Mine did develop some corrosion, to the point where the windlass stopped working, and needed to be removed, cleaned and replaced.
I have just finished fabricating a door, consisting of the old mirror, and a frame of UHMW. (The stuff most people know as Starboard, which is a brandname....) I will post pics after installation. |
