I have a lot of thick rust around top edge of big hose that goes into the muffler, right around where the smaller water injection arm attaches. Can't tell for sure if it is water leaking from where the injection hose attaches or if it's the weld. Have 1600 hrs on engine. The hoses are looking a bit ragged also. Who has replaced the exhaust mixer/hoses at what hours? Has anyone had it rewelded?

Thanks Norm. I forget to search the old forum. How did you get the hoses off? Heat gun, soap, hacksaw? One of the clamps is also frozen. Haven't tried the flange bolts yet but they look clean.
I'll take it to Elco. They welded the genset exhaust and did an excellent job. Rick |

Rick,
I've also had to replace the exhaust riser on my boat as it was leaking and causing corrosion along the hoses and clamps. Due to the vibration and extreme changes in temperature, this is an area of the engine that should be checked regularly by all owners and if you see rust and corrosion in that area, it should be considered suspect and a more thorough inspection should be done. In my case, I had to take a hack saw to the hose to remove the riser. I then shipped it to Catalina and they built an exact duplicate and shipped it back to me within a week. I then reinstalled and replaced all hoses as a precaution. As an aside, only smooth banded clamps should be used to connect the hoses to the riser as the notched ones will eventually cut into the rubber hose and start pre-mature leaking which will lead to the corrosion. Here's an update for general reference since everyone will face this sooner or later.
Much to my surprise, the hoses and bolts came off with no problem. I could not see obvious crack in riser but took it to welding shop and he cleaned off the rust and found a small crack at the injection arm. Will pressure test to confirm and attempt to reweld if truly leaking. Welder cautioned that I probably would not get another 5 years from riser but cost much less than new one. I've used him before and trust his judgment. Inside riser was clean and good shape. Also replaced 2" hose which was brittle and crumbling from heat at riser, and some clamps. Will add 2 clamps at injection hose as it was loose on barbless connection. Passed on the "good" Swedish clamps which were very nice but super expensive. Thanks for the inputs! Rick 704-3 |

One of the best welders in florida told me that it is not worth welding the riser. Replaced mine after eight years although I spent one year why the hose kept leaking and then read the fix on this great forum.

A few years ago I actually got to the department at Catalina that welds these. They tried re-welding mine but could not (stainless was too thin). Luckily, they had an exact replacement in stock so I went to the Parts Department & got it. They taped it up just like new, I was a happy camper. Considering the install time & fact I had a new one in my hand, it was the best thing to do.
