I have a set of Ocean Marin davits installed on my MkII. I also know another MkII owner who installed a set of Kato davits. Both brands appear to work well.

We have Ocean Marine on our MKII. Seems that perhaps the prev. owner should have gone with the larger size. We hoist a West Marine compact RIB at 11'2" with a 8 hp Nissan at 59 lbs on it for 150 lbs and then the gas at maybe #30.
We wondered if we wanted "them" when we first considered this boat. We typically hoist with the engine up. It is easier to hit a fuel dock and not worry about the tender and if its getting squished. Sometimes we will drag the dink. The backstay makes it difficult to get the dingy up sometimes. But we have used it for two seasons. Make sure you understand how to tie the dingy CLOSE to the boat. You don't want a swinging dingy putting tension on the blocks in ocean swells. It is something else to polish and something else to have to dry towels on as well. We will have a WAltz radar mount soon so as not to have "too busy" a stern platform. CAthy in CT |

Davit installation | #4 | ||

I installed the Kato Marine davits on Dancing Dolphin. I liked that they used 316 stainless versus 304 stainless in the Ocean Marine ones. The tubing is also thicker. Still I added an additional support brace to the port side stern rail since we carry the engine on that side. Overall we are very pleased with them.
One modification that is really handy is that we had the swim ladder cut so that we remove the top half and get full access to the transom with the dinghy on the davits. All told, I would repeat the installation with very few if any changes. I'll try and post some pictures soon. Dancing Dolphin (#739/3) |

Question: Does one leave the dink in davits on open water, especially in rough weather? If it fills would it be heavy enough to take down the davits? Or is a cover enough to keep the water out? Even a breaking wave?
For now we carry the dink on the foredeck....it fits perfect, and allows the hatches to stay cracked even in heavy rain....The "lines" even seem to fit in with the cabin. It's light enough that my 150lbs pull it right out of the water with the spinnaker halyard. We have three mini fenders under it, to keep from schratching (which the soft plastic barely does anyway). Sat there without budging for 1200 miles. www.woodenshoemusic.com/C...s/FLL.html Oscar and family "Lady Kay" C-42 # 76 WK-3C Georgetown MD, Fort Lauderdale FL "Hindsight is 20/20, if I knew then what I know now, I would now be living on a small wooden sailboat, making a few bucks here and there playing a guitar and singing songs in bars." |

For a different approach, consider Horizon Davits made in Canada and available from Defender. They are cantilevered from the transom and do not rely on support from the stern rail. We have been using them for 7 years with good success. They can be mounted to project aft far enough to clear the reverse transom, keeping the dinghy off the backstay. We have carried the dinghy in rough seas with no ill effects although we have never filled it with much water!
If I was starting over on the boat, I confess I would go with an arch to combine davits, wind generator, antenna and solar panel mounts, etc. into one unit. Colin |

I would personally not carry the dinghy and engine on the davits for an extended ocean voyage, especially in rough seas. With the engine removed, then I would feel comfortable.
Regarding filling the dinghy with water, we have a Sunbrella cover that keeps most water out, and we always keep the plug out so that whatever water does make it into the boat drains out. For short coastal passages, I feel very comfortable carrying the dinghy and engine on the davits including trips all around the Channel Islands and the famous Potato Patch. Dancing Dolphin (#739/3) |

Re: Davit installation | #8 | ||

I installed "Kato Marine Davits" on MiVida #631 last year.
After a year of research and observation of davit installations I chose Kato. Well constructed, strong, great steel, fine finish and easy to install. Plus...Kato gave me great support and assistance during my installation process. In addition to the davits I installed: 1. Stainless struts(2) attached to and between the davits, (great stabilization and a place to locate my future solar panel). 2. Stainless struts (2) from the stern pulpit top rail to transom seat area port and starbord. These provide great support for both the davits and the outboard motor mount which is on the stern pulpit itself. 3. Stainless rachet units with nyon straps to stabilize the dingy from to and fro and fore and aft movement at sea. (These are a MUST if you sail with the dingy hung from the davits!!) Use of the system at sea has been highly rewarding. Dingy rode well in 10-12 ft seas (with the two rachet straps very secure) going to wx in 20-25kts from SF to Point Reyes Drakes Bay Ca in Oct this year. Motor not attached to dingy of course in this sea state....it was on the stern pulpit mount where it was secure and immobile! I always leave the drain plug out and open in the dingy...to drain any water collected. If the C42 gets 'pooped" I would suspect that the system could not support that amount of weight. Never happened to me yet... Wonder if anyone has experience with dingy on davits and being pooped? In rainy wx in port with dink on davits I lower the stern of the dink to drain water as it accumulates.... Kato Marine is found @: www.Katomarine.com Lots of pics on their web site too. Hope your installation goes well. Tom Charron C42 #631 'MiVida" Alameda, Ca mivida@alamedanet.net |

I have a set of Ocean Marine Davits installed on my MKII I have also added suports from the sides of the opening angled to the swim step - makes a very sturdy arrangement.
Have sailed in heavy weather with dinghy attached (no Motor) Left the plug out and got pooped just once off Cape Blanco. It did not bend any of the supports and the dinghy was ok also. But it took a long time to drain - so now I angle it slightly towards the drain hole. I also sailed in a heavy rainstorm and it seemd to work pretty well. We are thinking of moving up to a 47 (oh the blasbemy) and I don't think that I will use Davits again. I like to attach the dinghy by its side to the top of the swim step and lift it up to the back of the pulpit. Just as you see on all the power boats. The engine will be hanging off the stern as usual. My question - has any one done this ??? And what is your experience??? |

I have tied my inflatable vertically to back of boat and it seemed to work fine. Until I get davits, I will probably keep using this method on ocean passages. I have seen some places sell an engine mount for dingy that allows you to pivot engine 90 degrees once dinghy is vertical. This allows outboard to sit up straight while it still continues to be attached to dinghy.

We have Atkins and Hoyle Davits on our 42. We carry a Zodiac 310 RIB with a 15hp outboard attached. They are very rugged and hold the dink outboard from the backstay.
