Will the Honda 1000 put out ample power for simple use, topping off or keeping battery banks up etc.I know most of you have the 2000.The weight factor is
important for me and also stowage is marginal on my boat. Thanks

A 50 amp battery charger at 12 volts is about 600 watts. That is close to the maximum for the Honda 1000. Look at the 2000. It will charge the batteries or
make hot water. It is not noticeably heavier thatn the 1000 and will fit very well in one of the lazaretes. I keep my 2000 in the port lazarette and move it
with a Gauerhauer engine hoist which also moves the outboard.
More than you wanted to know, but it is a full answer. |

Steve,
I've had my Honda 1000 for 7 years, have lots of experience with it. It is GREAT! Light (29 lbs dry, my wife can bring it to the bow by herself, full of gas), small (fits nicely on the starboard shelf inside the aft lazarette in the cockpit), a bit quieter than the 2000, does everything I want on the boat. If you have the original 35 amp battery charger, works great. If you have a Heart/Xantrex charger/inverter, I believe you need the 2000. I wired in a big rectifier/diode in line with the 1500 watt hot water heater element, with a bypass switch. When the diode is in use, drops wattage requirement to 750 watts. Since the 1000 can produce 900 watts continously, works great. Small drawback is it takes about 45 minutes to get hot water. If you plan ahead a bit, no real problem. My wife has a 900 watt hair dryer, works fine with the 1000. It does not handle the stock 875 watt microwave directly. The microwave motor trips the 1000 as it takes much more power when it starts up. When I need it (and don't want to discharge the batteries) I run the 1000, which charges batteries. Then run the microwave from the inverter. I run with a small deficit, but most of the watts go back into the batteries.

Gentlemen
Your timing could not be better on this subject. I too have the Honda 2000 but developed an issue this weekend while at the Isthmus. When I tried to run the water heater, and nothing else, my breaker would trip. The Generator also made a pulsing noise, rev up and down. Any ideas why? Ran the engine to heat the water but would like to use the generator for such things. Ran the battery charger just fine. Suggestions?

I find that I need to turn off the auto-throttle control at start-up, otherwise it seeks and trips. It could be the controller. Once the load is established,
I can then put the auto-throttle back on and it works fine. I don't know if that is the cause of your problem.

The water heater is 1500 watts and a 50 amp battery charger is 600 watts, exceeding the capacity of the Honda 2000 (about 1600 VA). I can only run one at a
time until the water gets hot (heater shuts off) or the battery charger is putting out less.

I am able to run both the 30 amp battery charger and the hot water heater at the same time with the Honda 2000 generator. It is pretty well maxed out, but the
breaker on the generator never trips.

Thanks for the input but maybe I need to be a little more clear on my issue. The water heater breaker on the panel it tripping not the breaker on the
generator. I am also only trying to use one of the two appliances, water heater, charger, at a time. The generator revs up and down while trying to run the
water heater then the breaker will trip.
Any suggestions? Everything worked perfectly last season.

I'm weak on my understanding of electrical things, but I have a new Honda 2000 and have used it several times at mooring at Catalina. The first time it
tripped the water heater breaker and I learned that I had to adjust the Link 2000 power share to a lower setting (read the owner's manual). I set it at 15
amps (takes just a few seconds to do) and turned off the battery charger while water heater was on and this cleared the problem. I heat the hot water, then
turn off the water heater breaker and then turn on the battery charger and all seems to work well. I was advised to do this by a technician at a Honda repair
facility. Now I'm a happy amper. Hope this helps.

Tripping breaker - new this season. | #9 | ||

Check the connections of the wires to the terminals on the breaker. If they are even a little loose the connection will heat up and the heat will transfer
inside the breaker causing a premature trip. Ours shows evidence of a hot connection where the vinyl on the spade crimp connector is discolored.
