Shower Sump Pumps

Posts: 160 06/03/08 07:48:45	Tags : None The shower sump pump on my forward head seems to have packed it in again. When I purchased the boat 2 years ago, the pump worked once and promptly quit. I replaced it with a new one, and now that I'm in my 3rd season, the pump is dead!! Is my situation unique, or have others had a similar problem with their shower pumps? Has anybody used a different brand than the Jabsco/Parmax pumps that were installed at the factory? Posts: 7 06/04/08 09:57:27	I have replaced both forward and aft shower drain pumps with the Whale Gulpers. They are somewhat expensive but will run dry and have worked well for me the last 2 to 3 years. Bill Catalina 42 #245

Posts: 10 06/04/08 17:55:54	I replaced the standard Par bilge pump with the West Marine Multiple Port Shower Sump. The new pump is much quieter, draws half the amps (8 vs. 4), it is also half the price of the Par or the Gulper. Also it is automatic so I do not have remember to turn it on and off. I have forgotten to shut off the shower faucets and have had the temporary shower shut off drip, flooding the cabin sole. This is not a problem with the shower sump system. I cut the drawer center bar free to allow access to the pump, a removable wood dowel on one end allows easy removal and installation of the cross bar. Paladin, #299, 2 cabin

Posts: 160 06/04/08 20:22:49	So it turns out that the problem with the Par Pump this time around was crud that was jammed into one of the diaphragms. After careful disassembly and removal of what looked like the tine off of a plastic fork???? everything seems back to normal for the time being. I will add a strainer to the system over the weekend, and hopefully it will resolve the problem. For the price, the pumps are almost in the consumables category, but they are in an awkward place to access, and if I have to cut the wires anymore, I will have to start splicing, which is not a good thing.
