RandyNo. The purpose of a topping lift is to control the shape of the mainsail. There are times when you want the boom to be higher than the high point on the vang. There are times when you want to use the vang to hold the boom down and the topping lift to hold the boom up (so it can't go up or down but stays at the same angle to the mast.) Play with it, see what makes you go fast!
Sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree. With 50 years of sailing and my specialty of trimming main on one design race boats when I'm not cruising,
I'll point out no racing boat carries a topping lift. In very light winds, it might help ease the leech by taking up the weight of the boom, but it's
not there for trimming purposes.
The purpose of a topping lift is to hold up the boom when the sail is not set.
