I'm anxiously awaiting getting my boat next week from Portland and haven't been able to mess around with it yet. What is the purpose of the topping lift on the 42 since it has a rigid vang??? The reason I was asking is that I want to add some stuff like preventers or a boom brake as well as cruising gennaker, cunningham etc, and it seems that I might run out of line stoppers eventually. I was thinking I would get rid of the topping lift if it doesn't serve much of a purpose. Posts: 130 05/11/08 15:22:58	The Dutchman on my boat is mounted to the topping lift. If you don't have a Dutchman, maybe you can get away with no topping lift. My topping lift is not run back to the cabin top but to a stopper in the mast end of the boom. Adding extra cabin top rope stoppers is a possibility. I added a couple and ran my traveler through them and got rid of the traveler cam cleats (which are inaccessible through a closed dodger). Posts: 155 05/11/08 16:45:54	The topping lift on Threepenny Opera is secured with a cleat attached to the side of the boom. I don't need to use a line stopper since the topping lift from the deck. With in mast furling, it is important to be able to hold the boom at ~90 degrees to the mast to facilitate furling. If you let the topping lift off to tighten the leech, it can get a little tight to pull in the last 1-2 feet of sail. I also don't want the boom bouncing off the leading edge of my dodger, so I use the topping lift to make sure the boom stays clear. Posts: 253 05/11/08 18:52:51	Randy, Right, if you don't have a dutchman or a furler, the topping lift doesn't do much for you if the vang already keeps the boom off the dodger. I have a topping lift on my boat, but I cleat it at the mast rather than run it back to the cockpit. This saves a sheet stopper. It can also be a back up main halyard or flag hoist too. Posts: 216 05/12/08 08:26:50	We have lazy jacks but no topping lift. The rigid vang holds the boom up off the dodger OK but is a bit springy. When we drop the sail I use the mainsheet to pull the vang springs down so the boom is nearly on the dodger to make it easier to furl. Once everything is done up I use the main halyard run to an shackle in the end of the boom as a topping lift so the boom can be held firmly in place with tension on the halyard and the mainsheet. Randy No. The purpose of a topping lift is to control the shape of the mainsail. There are times when you want the boom to be higher than the high point on the vang. There are times when you want to use the vang to hold the boom down and the topping lift to hold the boom up (so it can't go up or down but stays at the same angle to the mast.)
