Raymarine Wiring |

I am replacing my Raymarine ST50 wind, depth and speed gauges. I have removed the speed and depth transducers and found that the three wires that run from the
transducers (under the forward pullman bunk) to the instrument cluster are all at the bottom of the mast. Unfortunately the access to the area is very limited
so I can't really see where they go. My question, how are they routed aft from there? I would like to either pull them out, or pull them out and use the
pull to place a "tracer" cord for running new wire.

There is a wiring race molded into the fiberglass subfloor that runs from ~ the starboard fwd corner of the mast to under the chart table. All of the wires are encased in flexible conduit, which is clipped down at 8 inch intervals. There isn't a whole lot of room to work with as you've noted, but it is possible to reach the underside of the wiring race, by sticking your arm in through the little door at the aft end of the pullman. To access the top of the wiring race, you will have to remove the sole of the forward cabin, the threshold strip between the cabin and the salon, and the starboard cabin sole panel in the main salon. You'll wonder if the Catalina folks ever intended for the large starboard sole panel to be removed, but it does come out with a little bit of twisting and turning. Just make sure you've removed all of the screws, including a couple that are in the middle of the panel, and remove the metal knob on the windlass breaker before you start. FWIW, when I upgraded my instruments to ST60's I just reused the exisitng ST 50 transducers, They seem to work fine, except the depth sounder seems to quit around 350 feet. Good luck Addison

I could swear that I picked up the floor in the pullman cabin and found nothing but solid deck. But you are saying I should find an open top to the race? Am
I understanding you correctly?

It has been over a year since I've pulled it up, but on TPO, you will see the wiring race if you lift the floorboards. If you have the wiring schematics
for your boat, you'll see both the forward and aft race illustrated as diagonal lines with the forward race running from port forward to starboard aft, and
the aft race running more or less athwarship from just forward of the head to just forward of the galley.
Most of the forward race is actually in the salon, so if you tip the starboard panel in salon, you'll see it. I may be mistaken about the starting point in the forward cabin, because I had lifted all of my floor boards for refinishing over last winter. I used the opportunity to run the sensor wires for the Accugauge tank monitor sensors from the fwd tanks. Addison

In this picture from Irish Lady (#692) you can just make out the wiring chase Addison mentioned. Look at the very top middle of the picture where you can see
the cabling from the foward cabin emerging from under the ply floor board.

Are you interested in selling your speed / depth gauge?

Transducer for the depth gauge is non functional. Transducer for the speed gauge would require purchase of new thru hull tube. Depth head in good shape, speed head has real problems with buttons. Wind and Close Hauled wind in pretty good shape. If still interested send me a PM.

Raymarine Wiring | #8 | ||

Roger,
Are you sure you need to change the transducers and wiring? Just last weekend I changed out all of my old ST50 instuments for ST60's, including a Graphic Display head at the nav station. All of my old wiring and transducers worked fine with the new instruments (although I'm not sure if they would have worked with the newest ST70 system). Last year I sent my ST50 tri-data head to Raymarine to be bench-tested as I was getting crazy speed readings. They assured me the unit was working fine and therefore my trouble was in the speed transducer. I changed the transducer and was still getting readings of 13+ knots as I slowly motored through my marina. I changed all the control heads last week and everything is working great.

Rod:
Thanks for the info. I am getting rid of my Raymarine stuff. I think Raymarine only survives because Frank Butler, the Beneteau folks, etc. put their stuff on new construction. When I found out that they will not only not fix my ST-50 stuff but would not provide parts to their repair network to fix my stuff nor would they tell me the original source of the parts I swore I would never do business with them again. It also bugs the heck out of me that they spike their software so that you have to purchase extra (overpriced) parts. For example, the "core computer" for the autopilot has both NMEA and Seatalk busses. But the core computer doesn't convert wind, depth, or speed from NMEA to Seatalk. To do that you have to purchase a $125 conversion box. Or add three lines of code to the core computer. Not to mention that I think their product is grossly overpriced. I cut them some slack in this as I think everyone's products are grossly overpriced. My point of view is that if they cut their prices to 50% of the current prices they would most likely sell about 8 to 10 times more units.

I have a 2001 MK II and just recently we installed New Raymarine 70 instrument heads without changing any of the tranducers or wiring. All the Instruments work
as designed, but too complicated and the instructions in the manuals are beyond me. I had the technician out several times to show me how to adjust the
instruments (speed and Chartplotter) for my preferences, I could not figure the settings out by reading the instructions in the manuals. The E 120 chartplotter
/ radar is way beyond what I need - who needs to watch tv while sailing, but the screen is large and very usefull if you only use one the screen mode. Again -
no wiring was changed. The new autopilot is very good and tracks very well going downwind.
