I am looking for a reasonable method of marking the anchor chain so I know how much scope I have out.

I use the colored plastic wire ties or also called zip ties. I place three every 50'. They go through the gypsy fine. When one does break off I have
extras to replace them. Do not cut them, this makes them very visible.

I use electrical tie-wraps. Just pick some code that makes sense to you and add the same code to at least two links in a row. For example the first depth might
use a code of one tie-wrap, the second depth might be two, etc. You can go to a more complex scheme if you need to. The tie-wraps are easy to apply, they are
quite tough, and they are very easy to replace if necessary. They survive the windlass without any problem. They are small enough that they don't interfere
with the chain wheel operation. I orient the "lump" toward the inside of the link, but I don't know if it really matters.
Various colors, in addition to the traditional white, are available at Home Depot or other stores. There are black ones that are UV resistant, but they are harder to see, and the anchor chain won't get much UV in any case. Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870 |

I also use the zip ties. Think of the colors like roman numerals - just keep adding up each color band.
Yellow 25' Orange 50' Red 75' Blue
100'
Blue-Orange 150' Blue-Red 175' Blue-Blue
200'
Blue-Blue-Orange 250' Blue-Blue-Blue 300'

In case anyone is confused, tie wraps and zip ties are the same thing. Must be one of those regional jargon things. The original cable tie was invented by
T&B about 50 years ago, with a brand name of Ty-Rap.

We spray painted our entire chain in 25' intervals. Not just a mark, but the complete 25' length. It took a little while but it has lasted 8+ years.
A lot of the color has come off but I can still make out which 25' of chain I'm on. Using a label maker, I put the legend in the chain locker, e.g.,
0 '- 25' White 25' - 50' Black 50' - 75' Orange 75' - 100' Green etc.
