Posts: 10 03/14/08 21:46:27	Tags : None Hi We have a 3.3GPM Fresh water pump & a 12Gal HW Cylinder in the Engine compartment of our 99 2 cabin pulman C42. But when showering the water runs alternately hot/cold, whether using the exterior transom shower or the fwd shower. Doesnt matter what I do, you cant get a constant temperature. The fresh water pump manual says it has a bypass valve so should not be used with an accumulator. There is one of these in the engine compartment, but is disconnected, so I guess this probably isnt the original pump. Does anyonye else have this problem, if so how did you solve it? Any advice appreciated Stuart

Posts: 8 03/15/08 07:28:01	Stuart, if you have a check valve between the pump and the cold water inlet of the water heater that might be your problem. The check valve prevents hot water from back flowing into the pump and damaging it. If you have a check valve there may be debris in it causing it to stick, which would give you intermittent hot water. A good screen on the inlet side of the pump would be a good idea to protect the pump and any thing down stream. Paladin - MKI- #299- Ventura, CA Peter

Posts: 261 03/15/08 10:53:36	This problem can be caused by a restricted nozzle on the shower head. Due to the different routing of the hot and cold water plumbing there can be slight differences in pressure at the control valves, which is where the mixing occurs. The pressure differences can change with pump cycling. The cure is to make sure there is no significant back pressure from the nozzle. Otherwise either the hot or the cold will tend to dominate at the mixing location. This is a common problem in hotels when shower restrictors are added. Any change in system pressure, for example by other users, will cause the hot and cold to go out of balance. A plumbing device called a "twin ell" can greatly reduce the problem. (Probably not an option for boats.) A quick test would be to run the shower at much lower flow rates and determine if the temperature still fluctuates. If this explanation does seem to fit, then check the nozzle screens for dirt or other obstructions. I don't understand the comments about the accumulator. We replaced the orginal belt drive water pump with one of the new Jabsco VSD water pumps and that solved the problem. If you do a search on water pump you will see previous discussions on this topic.
