Posts: 169 10/20/07 07:02:10 Moderator	For what it's worth, the Jabsco is standard in our charter boat fleet. We replaced the factory Wilcox models with the Jabsco to be common (they didn't last either). The Jabsco pumps are cheap to replace and readily available. We've had the forward in for two seasons and the aft in for one. Still working. The heads are used about 12 weeks per year with little care or maintenance. Your mileage may vary. Posts: 13 02/12/08 20:47:50	Well it only took a couple of months following my purchase of my '94 C42 Pullman configuration C42 Mark I in October before I ran into the problem with head odor and my Jabsco Foreward Head valves going out. You would think the surveyor would have forseen this problem, but that is how it goes. So I've been looking at all the threads on Heads to see how to solve my problem, and as a group, a lot of us have had this problem. I've read that the Raritan appears to be a good, reliable replacement and it will drop fit in place of the Jabsco. So here is my question, will it drop fit into the Mark I and which of the Raritan models was used? Posts: 137 02/13/08 06:58:14	We are fans of the Jabsco.we have had only jabsco since 1988, thats 29 years. they function well the price is right if should have to replace the entire unit which we never had to do.parts are available at allmost any marine supply house and some RV stores. I wouldn't want to need a part and be told the have to order it. I rebuild every two years with a kit I usualy buy from Defender at just a little over 1/2 price over West Marine price . about the only thing you have to watch when rebuilding or servicing is not to over torque the screws when reassembling, I keep a kit on hand in my parts dept.By the way I have never had a clog in the head itself, in the macerator pump but not in the head. As for odor , it is not the head but the venting , hoses, water quality, and the the head additive. We use Odorless available at West,and any RV store at about 1/2 west's price, we use fresh water to flush except when offshore. there are volumes written about odor control on the web.so I can't go into that here. Think SIMPLE and stay away from exotic soultions. Dave Common Sense #810

Posts: 210 02/13/08 15:07:38	I don't think it's a drop-in. We are consdering replacing the forward Jabsco with the Raritan and it will require extending the shelf the head sits on. Here is a link to the Ph II manual. Page 4 has the dimensions. http://www.raritaneng.com/pdf_files/ph_II/L04v0505.pdf Measuring the existing space leaves it about 2" too small. At about 10 years both our heads needed rebuilding. I used a rebuild kit that came with the boat and got another year out of it before the pump shaft started leaking. Kits were $50.00 and did not include a seal for the pump shaft. Boaters World had new heads on sale for $99.00 at the time so I replaced both. Easier than a rebuild. Posts: 91 02/15/08 21:05:16	I have rebuilt my Jabsco electric and got it working but will convert to the Raritan next time it coughs for the forward head. That is connected to the Electra San system which works flawlessly and is a great system for it allows us to cruise without using a holding tank. In the aft head, I replaced it with a Groco manual and that is truly a fine head. The horizontal pumping action is easier than the vertical pump actions and moves a bunch of water so EASILY. In my aft head i have a lavac, it is the most simple and problem free head I have ever used. Posts: 30 02/24/08 17:24:18	when I bought my boat, this year I told Catalina to keep the heads, I got a whoppin 147.00 off the price of my boat, that told me something right away. I had also read on the forum before had and knew the heads where an issue, so skip factory mess, and went Vacu flush installed by my marina. I love them, and no intake of raw water thats key to me....plus they are a little taller than the jabsco factory heards, so its much easier to set down, and get up. So if you can afford it, I think its worth the extra money for peace of mind. I have read that here as well as talk a lady at the Annapolis boat show, she had them on her boat and loved them. well thats my two cents. Barry Surprise #998 3-cabin Pullman w/k
