Posts: 18 02/11/08 17:58:55	I'd just chime in that it sounds that you may be considering greater exploration and cruising and there is a balance to be had between, good heavy gorund tackle for peince of mind and that much weight at the bow for performance. Whether the design can handle it, needs also to be considered with how the boat preforms with wieight in the ends, excatly where you don't want it for performance. Not necessaily for speed but the comfort of the boats action in a seaway. We carry 300 feet of chain and a 66, and I am considering reducing the chain considerably.

Posts: 254 02/12/08 05:33:49	Just a thought, remembering waiting behind a small Bahama island as a tropical storm blew by, throwing sustained 50 with gusts to 80... my 35 cqr with 150' chain laid out along with another 50 to 75 of 5/8 nylon... my second 25 danforth with 50' chain and 125' 5/8 nylon.... we traded a case of coors to a fishing boat for 12 lobsters and three big red snappers ( clean and gutted ). Never a worry felt safe and secure anchor drag never went off. Too much chain effects performance and the boat does not ride well. The set up I described is great for the Florida keys and Bahamas. I do not know about what the West coast or Pacific requires. Do not know if this helps.... but it was a fond memory ! Mark I / 466 / 2 cabin

Posts: 108 02/12/08 10:16:31	West Coast requirements are dictated where you are anchoring. From Cape Flattery south I would be comfortable with 75 ft of chain and 200 ft of nylon line. But in the rock strewn coves of BC I have have used chain only with a 44 lb Bruce for piece of mind; and many a time pulled up the chain to see scratches on the chain where it rubbed over rocks. In Two Harbor Cove, Catalina Island - I am comfortable with chain and rode and have a good nights sleep. I like the new braided line - it takes up much smaller space - I keep both the bow rode and the rear rode in a canvas bucket in the forward anchor well. The rear anchor is disasembled in its bag in the rear lazarette with 15 feet of chain attached. Peter C'est la Vie Hull #746

Posts: 271 02/14/08 19:00:49	The braided line packs down nicely in the pictures shown in the advertising material. However, plain ol' three-strand packs down just as nicely with 100+ feet of chain on top of it in the anchor well. I carry a total of 150 feet of chain and 500 feet of 5/8" three-strand in the anchor well, with plenty of room to spare. Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870
