Posts: 141 01/25/08 10:16:07	Tags : None Greetings all I'm upgrading my ground tackle and I'm very seriously considering a 60 lb Manson Supreme as my new primary. Has anybody had any experience with this anchor on their MKII? Will it fit my upgraded double bow roller. Also how much chain will fit into the anchor well? I'd like to get 2 x 300 ft rodes with as much chain as possible. Apart from weight considerations, will 600 ft of chain fit?? Posts: 21 01/25/08 15:25:13	I have a 25 kg Rocna on my new 42 and it fits great. I have not had a chance to spend the night on the hook yet but testing shows that the anchor works well with the longer bow roller. The Manson Supreme is similar in shape and size because it is a bootleg (unauthorized) copy of the original made to inferior specs. Do your due diligence before purchase. Manson makes many different anchors and the one thing they all have in common is that they are copies of someone else's design usually with significant differences in quality and some questionable design changes like the slot in their Manson Supreme. Rocnas are now available from a company in Canada which helps with the shipping costs. I do not work for the company but after seeing the quality of their product I would probably be a good sales rep for them. I have 110 ft of chain and 200 ft of nylon rode in the locker and there is a lot of room left over. I am thinking a adding a Fortress Anchor with about 50 ft of chain and 250 ft of nylon rode. It looks like it will fit. You weren't planning on hanging two anchors off your bow rollers, were you? I do not think that would fit. Bob

Posts: 141 01/26/08 06:06:36	Thanks Bob It seems that anchors are like religion. I never realized how controversial an anchoring choice could be, so I'll take your advice and do my due diligence! I fitted the double bow roller so I could carry 2 anchors at one. Currently I have a 44lb Bruce on the inner roller, and my plan was to try and leave it there, and put a larger primary on the outer roller. There is ~18" of offset so I was hoping to get both on without too much overlap, but if that doesn't work I'll have to improvise. Here in the Lake Ontario, the 44 Bruce is all I really need, but heading into tidal zones and more exposed anchorages seems to demand something heavier in order to sleep well at night. FWIW I just bought a Fortress FX37 to use as stern anchor, or a spare storm anchor because when it is dismantled, it will fit quite nicely in either the bilge area under the nav station, or under the pullman. Have you had any issues with the Maxwell windlass lifting your Rocna? Posts: 21 01/26/08 18:56:45	I could be wrong about two anchors not fitting at the same time. I had 2 33 lb Bruce anchors hanging in a double bow roller on my C350. They fit but I found that the second anchor made it more difficult to retrieve the one that I used and I never used two anchors at the same time, so after a while my second anchor ended up in a lazzerette. I also found the weight in the bow to be a problem but that was on a 350. I have only used my windlass once and that was to load the anchor and chain on board from the back of my Subaru. The boat was on the hard so it was not much of a challenge. I don't know how much extra effort would be required of the winch for the extra 20 lbs or so of anchor. I suspect not too much and you can lift 300 ft of chain 30 ft or so at a time unless you are anchored in 300 ft depth. What I worry about is all the cool stuff that I find to lift (or attempt to lift) up from the bottom. My old Bruce anchors have hooked large fishing nets, cable, rope and in one instance a winch on the deck of an 80 ft sunken wreck (no it was not on the chart). I do make a point of using the engine to move the boat over the anchor not the windlass and also use the engine to break the anchor free of the bottom. I suspect that there is a large enough safety factor on the windlass to lift that much ground tackle. Will your Fortress anchor fit in the niche that is moulded in to the anchor locker? I think the perfect second anchor would be the Fortress (not sure what size) with about 50 ft of chain and a lot of nylon rode. I'd like something that I can deploy easily from the dinghy if I need to kedge myself out of trouble sometime. I hear good reviews of the Fortress especially concerning the holding power to weight ratio. Have you used yours much? Bob s/v Lucy hull #1003

Posts: 141 01/26/08 19:19:33	I haven't used the fortress yet. In fact its sitting in the middle of the living room, still in the factory box. I just picked it up at the boat show last week. As for fitting into the well, there is no way an FX 37 is going to fit. When I bought my boat, the previous owner had a little FX 15 that fit in the notch, but he kept his boat in a fresh water resevoir that was only a mile or so wide at its widest. There are some threads floating around from people who have loaded up FX-23's, but I suspect that would be the largest possible. Posts: 169 01/26/08 20:19:37 Moderator	I've got 100' of chain and 400' of braided line (lays flatter) for the primary (44lb bruce). The secondary (33lb bruce) has 45' of chain, but I put the 200' of three-strand in the laz. When I tried to put all this in the well, it was level full. I did make a divider for the locker out of starboard. The secondary chain lives on the larger port side, with the primary chain on top of it. This gives it a good drop off the windlass. Most of the line lives in the smaller compartment to the starboard. This has worked out fairly well. The secondary line is more frequently used as a sternline. Both anchors fit on the bow. Posts: 121 02/07/08 01:55:14	I have two anchors on the bow (well actually one is in the Bahama sand on the bottom), a 44 lb Delta and a 65lb Manta. The Delta has 200 feet of chain and the secondary anchor has 200 feet of rope rode on a shelf in the locker. This works well. I am mystified as to why you want 600 feet, even if you can get it in the locker. When you pull up the chain with the windlass, the chain must fall down into the locker in order to avoid jamming the windlass. When retrieving my 200 foot chain, I have to stop and knock the stack of chain down to the bottom periodically. 600 feet might fit but would totally unusable. Don't obsess over anchors. Lots of cruisers carry Fortress anchors as a fold-up backup but nobody ever actually uses them! Nobody ever uses a stern anchor either. My somewhat opinionated two cents FWIW after cruising full and half time for eight years. Colin

Posts: 303 02/07/08 06:51:39	Addison, For a primary, I have 300' of chain attached to a 66 lb. Bruce anchor. This amount of weight took my boat down by the nose a surprising number of inches. Fortunately, the boat was brought level again by the water maker, generator, additional battery, etc. in the aft end. The result is that this spring I am finally having the water line raised during my next haul-out -- I'm tired of paying the diver extra every two months to clean the 1/2" bathtub ring above the bottom paint on my boot stripe. All I'm sayin' is you really should take the weight considerations into account after all..... 600' of all-chain rode + two anchors will have your boat doing a head stand. >I'd like to get 2 x 300 ft rodes with as much chain as possible. Posts: 169 02/07/08 08:29:27 Moderator	More on the divider.... It's actually really simple. There is a stock piece of Taco starboard at WM, probably the 24x27x0.5 that is almost the right size. I set it into the well and of course the forward bottom corner hits the inside of the bow fairly quickly. I used a piece of cardboard or something to mark a parallel line on the board such that the bottom of the board had about the same flat left as the bottom of the well. Cut along this line and the board will drop all the way in. You can take a couple passes to approach the right shape. I also clipped off the bottom aft corner so that I stayed off the fillet at the bottom of the well, and provided plenty of room for water to reach the bottom. I divided the locker with about 1/3 on the stbd side, 2/3 to port, so the chain had plenty of room. To hold the upper aft portion of the divider in place, I used two 6" pieces of 1" aluminum angle stock screwed to the aft face of the well. Looking down, the two angles look like this..... _\| \|_ Nothing else but gravity and chain hold the divider in place. It can be removed just by pulling up on it. Based on Bob's advice about the Rocna, and the excellent responsiveness from Suncoast Marine, I am leaning towards the 25Kg Rocna as my new primary. I'll keep my 22kg Bruce as a lunch hook, because it's there, but I'll switch the rode I have (200 ft of chain + 100 ft of rope) over to the Rocna. I'll add a new rode which will be 100ft chain + 200ft of triple braid and attach it to the Bruce. As for the Fortress, I'll connect 30 ft of chain and leave it in the bilge until I have a specific need. If I find myself needing to prepare for a storm, I'll probably slip the Bruce off its rode and fire up the Fortress as the secondary mainly because it is easier to dump into the dinghy and drop it in the right place. I know that Catalinas can carry significant weight, but even the most robust designs have their limits. The weight of 600 ft of chain has not escaped me, so we'll simply make do with less chain. I still want to have a couple of 300ft rodes however, because I am of the school that scope and weight are your best friends if you want maximum holding. I've always slept like a baby on the hook and I don't want to do anything to change that!! Rod FWIW I took the Interprotect and the bottom paint right up to the boot stripe in anticipation of carrying extra cruising weight. It looked a little weird at first, but after a few weeks in the water it looked perfectly normal. Thanks for you advice and comments.
