My portholes (lights) have crazed, as everyone elses has, which started be wondering.... has anyone ever replaced the plastic with the same size tempered
glass?

Mark,
All portlights were glass at one time. They were probably tempered glass in more recent times. However, I plan to replace the crazed lights with similar acrylic material. I would rather not have glass in those locations. Tempered glass is stronger than ordinary window glass, but it will break. It is also not quite so easy to get custom sizes of tempered glass. It needs to be properly heat-treated after cutting to the correct size. It can be done, of course, but it is a bit more of a project than many people might expect. It is a shame that the recent Lewmar products are utter garbage. I have seen no problems on previous boats with similar Lewmar ports. Lewmar claims that the owners are doing something wrong, but that is just nonsense. We have never once used anything containing ammonia or any solvent to clean the port lights. They are all crazing like crazy after only a couple of years. Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870 |
