Has anyone replaced their 38 gal diesel tank with the 46 gal tank? |
Lead | ||
|
I'm seriously considering removing the 10-year old 38 gal tank & replacing it with the 46 gal tank, has anyone done this? How major of a job was it? It
looks like it will fit just fine and the fill, vent and engine supply hose will require no mods (nipples are at the same locations & same angels). May need
to do something with the return hose, but doesn't look like a show stopper. Biggest issue as I see it is the newer boats don't have a liner under the
tank, but hull 600 does. In #600, the tank is bolted to the liner. In the newer boats, looks like it is glassed right to the hull, something I'd rather not
do, but so far, don't see any other way. It still looks like the bigger tank will fit, even with the liner. Another possible issue is squareness of the top
of the tank with the waterline. I want to be sure it is parallel to the waterline without any shims (want it to rest right on the liner). The old tank is still
perfectly good, just looking for a bit more capacity. One other advantage of the newer tank is a second engine supply/return nipple, like for a diesel
generator (which I don't need at this time, but may be a nice feature some day). Another attraction is drilling a new hole for a Snake River fuel level
sender while the tank is out of the boat.

Can't help you with your question but FWIW we removed the aft holding tank and had a fuel tank made to fit the space. Holds about 30 gallons. Plumbing is a
challenge.
We put a 10 gallon holding tank in the lazarette. Colin

Norm:
On our C30, I replaced the fiberglass over the tabs with a custom made "stud plate" and a strap over the top of the tab. It worked great, looked nice, and made the tank easily removable.

46 Gal diesel tank does not fit in hull 600 | #3

Well, I bit the bullet and bought the larger tank. Garry Willis & I took lots of measurements and it looked like it would fit after a few modifications to
the plywood above the tank. The new tank seems to be about 1" higher, so it appeared the plywood just above the diesel fill hose would need to be cut out.
We disconnected all the hoses, unscrewed all screws & removed the 10-year old tank. Unfortunately, the new tank didn't fit. There is a piece of the bottom liner (along the forward bottom of the tank) that sticks out too much to allow the tank to sit on the liner. I didn't want to do any fibreglass cutting, so we put the old tank back in. Pretty big job, but I learned there wasn't 1 drop of water, no algea, and just a very small amount of dirt in the 10-year old tank. The fuel has never been polished or touched in that time. That tells me quite a bit: the diesel fill deck fitting O-ring has never leaked water; fuel has been very clean in So. Cal (mostly Marina del Rey); Biobor anti-fungus fuel additive works great; condensation is not a problem in So. Cal (or the Racor primary filter water separator works great, but I don't remember taking any water out). By the way, this photo of the new tank shows why the fuel gauge is not linear. http://www.catalina42.org/photos/fuel-tank-46gal.jpg

Norm, is the 46 gallon tank now standard on new 42s or is the tank from another Catalina model? Just curious.

Rodney,
I'll answer for Norm right now. The 46 gl. tank is now standard on the 42 and has been for several years now. I'm not sure when the switch happened (someone on this forum may be able to help with that) but believe it was after hull # 700 or thereabouts. The tank that Norm and I attempted to replace his 38 gl. tank with was the now standard 46 gl. tank. Too bad it didn't fit either as 38 gls is not quite enough.

Garry, thanks for the reply. I suspected that the tank was standard on the newer models as the specs on the CY website reflects the new capacity. Too bad it
didn't fit as the extra capacity would be pretty nice to have. Do you think the newer tank would fit if the liner in the tank area was removed? I'm not
thinking about doing that but am just curious.

46-gal probably would fit | #7

If the liner was removed. I believe that would be a huge job, much more than I want to undertake. I did notice newer boats do not have a liner under the tank.

Is there a label on the tank that tells you the capacity? I like to check mine to see if it is one of the newer 46 gal tanks.

There is a label indicating capacity | #9

The 46-gal tank also has an extra pair of ports for a diesel generator or diesel heater. As you're looking aft at the tank, on the right (center of the boat) you should see 2 or 4 small brass fittings. I believe if you have 2, you have a 38-gal tank.

After all the above chatter I decided to remove the matress and inspect my fuel tank - I must have a different model (2 cabin -centerline) The label on the
fuel tank says: 48 Gallons. (not 46) I has the two different outlet fittings one for the engine and one for the gen set.
