Posts: 310 12/11/07 18:48:31	Tags : None Hi Guys, I need to confirm a yanmar part number. I don't have my part numbers by my computer, sadly. I have the 50 hp Yanmar on our '97 boat. It's the 4JH2E model. I have been asking the yard to put a 30 micron filter on the boat. They just put a 2 micron on it. I clogged up the summer before last. can anyone confirm whether they are using a 30 or a 2 and what the 30 part number is ? Thanks, CAthy in CT

Posts: 265 12/11/07 20:47:38	CAthy, I think you may be confusing two different filters. The standard Yanmar filter comes in only one version, 10 micron. The typical Racor filter added by Catalina can be fitted with either a 2 micron, a 10 micron, or a 30 micron element. These Racor elements are widely available at most marine stores. It would not make much sense to ever install a 2 micron filter for this application. There is some continuing debate over using a 10 micron or a 30 micron element in the Racor filter. The 10 micron blocks some of the stuff that would get trapped in the Yanmar filter, and so the Yanmar might last a bit longer. On the other hand the 30 micron Racor filter is probably better if the tank has lots of stuff in it. The big stuff will be filtered out first, without quickly plugging the Racor filter, while the final filtration is still kept to the required level by the Yanmar filter. Personally, I use a 10 micron filter in both locations. I might change to a 30 micron some day if the 10 starts to clog too soon. I keep both types on board. Posts: 278 12/11/07 22:07:20 Moderator	Gene, FYI, the Yanmar or secondary filter on some of these engines have a 2 micron filter on them and Cathy's may be one of them. Mine is a 2 micron and I know of at least one other here in the marina that uses the same. Also, my primary or Racor is one of the earlier ones and uses a 2 micron spin on filter. This is not my choice and I would prefer a 10 or perhaps 30 as you point out but I can only get the R24S in a 2 micron. The fuel we get around here is incredibly clean (I know, there's always the exception) and I know I'm throwing away perfectly good filters when I change them once a year but it gives me peace of mind. Norm and I recently took out his old 10 year old fuel tank to potentially replace it with a larger size in the same location. Once we realized the new one wouldn't fit we took the old one and drained all the fuel out of it into a clear container and for the life of us, we couldn't find any particles suspended or not in it. We expected to find some sludge etc. in there but to find nothing really impressed us. So, we reinstalled the old one and put the fuel back in. Runs fine. Garry "Breezn" #502 2-Cabin

Posts: 146 12/12/07 06:29:32	Just FWIW, a vacuumn gauge installed between the Racor and the Yanmar will take the guesswork out of knowing just when you NEED to change the primary. A quick check of the gauge on a bouncy night can reassure you that there is not too much stuff clogging up your filter, or that there is, and it's nice to know this BEFORE the engine dies. I will never run another boat without the gauge. James

Posts: 310 12/12/07 07:17:34	I spoke to Bob at Mac Boring in NJ and he seems to suggest that My engine should NOT have a 2. He thinks that a 2 micro is way to fine. Depends on how often you want to change filters. He is looking for something in writing. He would consider a 10 or a 30. I will post to the group when I get more info out of him. I am having the yard change and get rid of the 2 micron. I have never had a problem with my fuel with the exception of having an O ring go bad and let water into a tank 15 yrs ago. but then it might have been water from the fuel station also, who knows. I have been looking for a long time, and every source I can find on the entire Yanmar 4JH series, up to 4JH3, says that the fuel filter is either 129470-55700, 129470-55701, or 129470-55702. Only the latter seems to be available today, and it is shown as a direct replacement for the previous models. The service manual referenced by Norm the other day, which is for the original 4JH, says that the fuel filter is part number 129470-55700. It also notes that the "Max dia. of unfiltered particle" is 5 micron. I have found other sources that say the filtration size for the current 129470-55702 is 10 micron. If there is another choice for the engine filter, I have never spotted it. In any case the primary filter (typically Racor) should be set up to take out the sludge and grunge. The secondary filter on the engine is required to protect the high pressure fuel pump and the injectors. It would not be a good idea to open that filter up to 30 micron. The 10 micron spin-on cartridge is R24T (blue), and the 30 micron spin-on cartridge is R24P (red). The same filter sizes are available for the part number 1010 elements used in the turbine-style filters. I recently installed a left over 55701 and recently bought a few new, sealed 55702's on eBay. I've heard many times the Yanmar filter is 2 micron. I've googled and yahooed this every which-way and have not confirmed the microns. I've searched Torrensen & Boatswain's Locker, shipstore.com, bluewatershipstore.com, no confirmation on micron specs. It's amazing how difficult it is to get a straight answer to the specs, for such an important component. I did see a reference to "Yanmar 104500-55710 3 Micron Fuel filter". That gives me a warmer feeling ours is closer to 2 micron. I think 99%+ of 4JH engines use the recommended Yanmar filter as I have also not heard of any cross-references. For what it's worth, I've been using a 30 micron Racor filter but just dropped to a 10 micron element. Posts: 265 12/12/07 17:17:20	There are a couple of filters that are direct replacements for the Yanmar fuel filter, at least mechanically. I cannot say anything about the quality, and I use only the genuine Yanmar filters. The equivalents I found are: Fram P5157 Wix 33394, 33390, 33395 NAPA 3394 (made by Wix) The Wix 33390 is listed as a replacement for the Yanmar 129470-55701, and the Wix 33395 is listed as a replacement for the Yanmar 129470-55700. I could not find any cross reference for the Yanmar 129470-55702. The Wix 33394 and 33390 are specified as 10 micron, while the Wix 33395 is specified as 6 micron. Of course that says nothing about the Yanmar original. I am sure this is vastly more detail than anyone here really wants to know, so I will quit now. Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870
