Tino, I would very much appreciate a picture of your installation. We are not so many hull numbers away from yours (662) so the comparison should be a good
one.
Thanks in advance, Charlie |

Thanks to everyone for their input. I have, after serious consideration opted for Garhauer davits. Mark, at Garhauer seemed very knowledgeable about Catalina
42 applications. They are on order. No more wrestling with my dinghy!!

Hi Charlie
After my first e-mail to you, suggesting that you use the Garhauer davits, I had a chance to visit the Garhauer factory and while I was there pick up some blocks and a new traveller to upgrade my Ca 42 and generally look at their stuff. The quality of the marine accessories simply amazed me. I can tell you this - they stand behind their product 100% no questions asked. You will not regret your decision to buy Garhauer. We installed Garhauer heavy duty davits last spring and are very hapy with the system. We have an 11' Apex with a 15 hp Yamaha total weight 200lbs,and no
movement at all.We have 2 struts from the rail to the the transom and at the starboard side where we keep the motor an additional strut right under the davit
arm.
We had Mark at Garhauer make at his suggestion the davit height one foot higher , With the size of our dingy I might have had them increase the arm length by 6 " it would have made clearing the back stay easier. But it has not been a problem. Dave Zeuli Common Sense #810 |

Dave--
After installing the davits are you able to use the step OK for boarding? John |

With the dingy on the davits and the step down one can squeeze under the dingy. but can,t raise or lower the swim ladder with the dingy on the davits.

A word of caution - in the thread above there has been much discussion of installing the davits high enough to lower the ladder and to be able to use the swim
platform. Here is my concern: The weight of the dinghy and motor combined with seaway can cause undue stresses on the mounting points. The higher the weight
(dinghy and motor) the more that becomes a problem. If you are sailing in the benign Southern California area and have no desire to extend your cruising
grounds, a higher than normal mounting will probably be ok. However I for one, have been in sea conditions that have tested the boat and crew - the last thing
I want to worry about at that time is the dinghy ripping off the davits. I have had a problems with the dinghy coming loose in seaway and was able to secure it
with some effort (it did not have the engine attached - the engine was mounted on back pulpit) When I back into my slip for convenience of boarding, I secure
the dinghy on the foredeck. I addition to the davits I also have the Garhauer Motor lift/crane - makes it very convenient to lift the motor off the dingy (4
stroke - 112 lbs.) . I use the spare halyard to lift the dinghy to the foredeck - its almost effortless. By the way I saw the cut up foldable ladder and it
looks complicated to me. At least the folding ladder I saw - the Catalina dealer in Vancouver BC had it fashioned for a customer. I like to keep things
simple.

Dave---
Re-reading my question I see I didn't phase it correctly. With the ladder in the water and the dinghy floating, how easy is it to board from the dinghy to your C42? Does that horizontal support between the davit arms get in the way? Thanks, John |
