Additional winch placement |

Has anyone added a set of winches aft of the original genoa/headsail winches on the MK1 model? I am finding it difficult to maneuver around the hlem to tend to
the head sail. I am an amputee as of last year and the wheel comes close enough to the settee that it force me to climb over to trim. I was considering
mounting a second pair aft or possible relocating the originals enough so they can be tended from for or aft of the helm???
all help is greatly appreciated. Chris |

I installed Lewmar 42s 20'' aft of primary winches.I have a Mk1 also. The instalation requires proper angle pads(I used black Delrin) beneath the
winch(like the one under the primary).Access under the combing is unavailable, you have to cut inspection plates from under the aft area to access the thru
bolts. .I would use the 52 self tailing Lewmar not the 42. 42s are too small to handle the line thickness of the primary winch.Good luck,

Chris,
I took a snap of a 42 MK II with secondary winches installed for you so you could see placement and it appears that this would be a good location for your needs. What this guy did was smart. He relocated his 54's to the secondary position and got a pair of 58's to serve as primaries. The 54's are really undersized IMHO for this boat when the winds come up and the 58's are more suitable. Otherwise, Steve's writeup tells the story.

I note in the picture that the foot block appears to have some kind of wedge below it. Mine are mounted flush to the deck, and the lead to the winch is not as
desirable as it would be if they were canted slightly. Is there a stock "wedge" or do people just craft their own?

Roger,
I installed my second set of winches using circular teak winch pads. I cut the bases of each pad at an angle so that the winches are level. A band saw was used to make the cuts. One side of each pad is very thin, while the other side is considerably thicker. Imagine a cylinder which is cut perpendicular to the length on one end, and at an angle on the other end. In order to compute the angle, I balanced a winch in the level position at the place on the coming where it was to be installed. I then merely measured the size of the wedge needed to level the winch. These winches were installed in 1994, and have served admirably since then. Jerry Gagerman C-42 #431 Current Sea |

![]() Larry,
Attached please find several photos of the secondary winch installation on teak pads. As you can see, the pads were cut so that the winches are level on the cockpit coamings. Regards, Jerry Gagerman C 42 #431 Current Sea |
