My 1992 2-cabin pullman has a Jabsco 36800-1000 fresh water pump. It is leaking -- spraying water through what looks to be the diaphragm. From searching the
web, I see that Jabsco is still selling the pump, and the diaphragm, and a service kit that includes the diaphragm. How tough is it to replace the diaphragm?
Should I also replace the belt, the inlet and outlet valves, and the pulsation dampener which are part of the service kit? Or, should I just replace the whole
pump? Any advice will be appreciated!

They are good pumps. Replacing the diaphram shouldn't be too hard. I would replace all the "easy" parts in the service kit.
Of course, this assumes the service kit is substantially cheaper than a new VSD pump.

I would replace the old Jabsco pump with a new VSD pump. You have gotten a 15 year life out of it, which is pretty good for a water pump. We replaced the belt
drive pump with a VSD as one of our first upgrades to get rid of the surging hot/cold water we were getting in the forward shower.

FWIW, I replaced the original with a new variable speed and it was worth every penny and wasn't even very hard to do. Used the same plumbing. You really
won't regret getting the new one.

I too had to replace the old pump in Hull#746 -not because the pump was broken but for some reason it had a 10 amp circuit breaker and it tripped the braker
during the most inconvenient time - when it happened to the admiral, in the middle of shampooing - the orders were clear. I replaced the old one with an
automatic variable from Jabsco, expensive, but I could not be happier. In checking with Catalina they also suggested a 15 amp breaker. I did leave the old
breaker in place and I noticed that the new pump draws only 3 amps now and there is no chattering even when two taps are open. Sometimes we waste a lot of time
trying to repair stuff past its prime and I am most guilty of this. Get the new pump its worth it its also a simple install -wear a hard hat though - I did
leave some skin on top of the door that opens the area behind the water heater where my pump was located.

I am guilty of keeping the old stuff running because I have an inventory of parts and a spare pump. Changing the diaphragm, valves and pulsation dampener is
not hard and you will have a pump that runs like new in an hour or two.
On the other hand, the design is a bit Rube Goldberg and you will be doing it again in a few years. I might consider a cheap centrifugal pump to replace it I did not already have the parts, etc. Colin |

Thanks for all the input. I decided to go with replacing all the parts that come with the service kit. I didn't want to have to re-plumb any of the
existing water lines -- the newer pumps looked like I would have to do so. We have been perfectly happy with the "old" pump, so once I replace the
diaphragm, all should be OK.
