I'm about to install my new alternator and remote regulator and noticed that they recommend not installing the regulator in the engine compartment because
of the heat. Where have other people installed their regulators and how has it worked out?

When my boat was commissioned, they installed it just above the engine--right, bad spot.
I moved it aft as much as the cable would reach, about 12" from the top of the engine room, right above the sea strainer. Heat doesn't seem to be as much of a problem there. Still not a perfect location, but I think it's ok.

I installed mine right above the alternator on the port side of the engine compartment. I believe that the engine compartment in the 42 is well ventilated and
heat build up isn't that great. Also this keeps it away from any water source that seems to me to be of greater concern.

I put mine on the port wall of the engine room (inside) near the top about 5 years ago. Heat hasn't been a problem. There would be nothing to keep you
from extending the wires to get it outside the engine room.

I mounted mine on the frame of the engine compartment, port side, just where the cover meets the frame. The unit failed after a few weeks, was replaced under
warranty and has been working fine for the last 5 years.
The unit has a readout on it as well as a process for setting parameters. I wanted the unit accessible and visible. Works great where it is. |

Ours is wire tied to the water intake so I may view it from the access door port side. About the same place I had it on our c 34 for 13 yrs, no problem with
heat.

The external regulator is installed outside the engine compartment. It is on the port bulkhead aft of the companion stairway in the galley area. I had a well
ventilated plastic cover constructed to protect the regulator and wires from someone accidently hitting it whileworking in the galley. It's a cool location
and seems to be out of the way.

Sashay's regulator is mounted above the alternator in the engine compartment on the port side as high as possible. No problems in 5+ years.
