Check your Macerator pumps |
Lead | ||
|
I was attempting to empty the forward holding tank recently and while the macerator pump started, it immediately started running slower and slower and finally
stopped after about 10seconds. My first thought was a clog. Of course this could only happen with a full tank. Anyway I removed it (Jabsco) and discovered
the pump was not plugged, instead it was binding up. There are 4 bolts that go through the intake nozzle and through the pump to hold them to the motor. One
of the bolts had corroded through completely and two others we about to let go. These bolts are exposed to the head effluent inside the nozzle. While 3 bolts
may hold the unit together, it causes the pump shaft to bind if one is missing

Bob,
I was resigned to changing the pump (another Jabsco throw-away-don't-repair item), but I'll check the bolts and maybe get away with just replacing a bolt or two. Thanks.

Rod: My use of the word "bolts" was to simplify may explanation. Actually they are studs and don't appear to be removable.

Thanks, Bob.........I guess it's back to plan A, replace the unit.
I changed both macerators in 2002 -- with the very light use they've had, it would seem 5 years isn't a very long life.

Has anyone found a more durable macerator pump than the Jabsco? I am looking at my second replacement of the forward macerator in 2 years. Not a fun
project.

I put a Sealand pump in our previous boat that ran perfectly for 6 years. One day I had a brain cramp and flushed a paper towel down the head to the
holding tank. It made it through the pump just fine and finally clogged the thru-hull that was slightly smaller than the pipe. It can run dry. When the pump
on Ursa Minor fails I will replace it with one of these and put in a wind-up type bathroom fan timer.

You can get a rebuild kit for the macerator we have on our boat and it is actually not that bad a job to install it. New cutters, seals, etc. I installed them
myself and they are Johnson Pump - I know one has the West Marine name on it. I found the rebuild kit on Ebay for about $15. I think you could disassemble and
rebuild the pump in place without disconnecting the hoses from the ends if you can get at it on your boat.
Best to do it when the holding tank is empty!! Colin

The studs are replaceble. You can get them from Jabsco for about $10 for four. David 492 |

Thanks Dave. Next time I'm on the boat I'll check to see if this is the problem.

I just replaced my 2 original Jabsco macerators. The original ones just made noise and didn't pump out anything. I found new ones online at a good price,
but I'm disappointed the original ones didn't last too long.
The thought of rebuilding them wasnt pleasant. Replacing them is bad enough! I used plastic bags held over the end of the PVC pipe by the hose clamps to keep the smell down while I was working. Have a bucket ready to catch any overflows! The whole job took less than an hour and I used the original pipe junction at the bottom of the pump to save rebedding all the pipes. It works great now.
