Purchase a Catalina 42 |

My wife wants to sell our Cape Dory 36 and purchase a Catalina 42. My question is; should we buy new or used? We would like to get something fairly new if we
go the used route. What kind of fair prices should we look for?
Thanks, Mark and Sarah Alexandria, Va If you guys know of a few good boats in the area please let us know |

We bought our boat when she was 6 years old and have owned her for 9 happy years. If you have a good surveyor check over the boat carefully pre-purchase, you
shouldn't have any hesitation to buy one of these fine yachts.
The price will depend upon area, equipment, and condition. Some local research should get you in the right ballpark.

Mark and Sarah,
I bought a new Catalina 42, so new I am still waiting for delivery. However, I chose new because for the first time in my life had the chance to do so, and wanted to have a boat that I could be the one making all the mistakes on, making all the first imporvements putting my name on her, putting the first name ever on the stern without messing with all the probs of getting some elses privious marks off, I am guessing there are a whole list of reasons why, other than just cause I want to... However you can get a quility used boat if you take your time and look, right before I got mine I had seen one that was set up very nicely it even came with the dishes, so if you take your time you can find a great deal....But if you want to take the plunge and buy new, think very carefully about what you want, and what you want to do....and how soon you want to do it. I put a some things on earlier than later because I didnt want to mess with it later.... As far as you choice of boat, I think the C42 is great choice, I investigated other boats before I made the choice to get the Catalina, I looked at Hunter, (didnt even come in a close 2nd in my book...but tried to be fare to all brands) I looked long and hard at a Caliber 40 LRC, but decided for the money that I got more of what I was looking for and needed in a boat. For me the third cabin is a great bonus. Well hope my ramblings have helped. Barry

Mark & Sarah:
New versus used is probably determined by your budget. We bought a new Catalina 36 in 1998 and then bought a 4 year old 42 a couple of years ago. The reasons for going the new route are obvious; NEW, warranty, NEW, etc. If you go the used route find a good surveyor. If you go the used route make sure the offer is subject to a survey and sea trial TO YOUR SATISFACTION. You will find the 42 is a great boat and loves the wind. We have no regrets moving up to the 42. Bob 776 2 cabin centerline |

Hi Mark and Sarah I too bought a new Ca 36 in 2003 and then in 2005 bought a used Ca 42 (2001 model) I did spend a lot of elbow grease and some money upgrading the 42 to our
standards. Replaced all the lines, upgraded the traveller system and installed the new Catalina Hardtop Dodger. I had the Ca 42 delivered to the Pacific North
West from Lake Michigan (expensive) and spent a year sailing that area and enjoying the Catalina 42. Even with the trucking and all the upgrades (which were
more expensive than you could get via a negotiated price from a new boat dealer) I figure I am still ahead of the game. I then brought the boat down the West
coast to So Cal, it took two weeks but what a great experience, stayed in harbors that I always read about, met a lot of people. So to answer the question new
vs used - depends how handy you are and what do you want to do with the boat. If you wnt an out of the box experience, which I had with the Ca 36, then buy
new. If you want the self satisfaction of saving money and fixing up your CA 42 to your tastes, then buy used.

Two years ago, we bought a used 1992 2-cabin that had fewer than 450 hrs. on the original diesel and an original mainsail that looked like it had never been
used. The previous owner was a liveaboard, so all the boat systems were in excellent working order, but the guy got tired of getting the boat ready to be
sailed so it just was used as a houseboat. We paid less than half of what we would have paid for an under-equipped new boat, leaving us plenty of $$ to improve
the boat to our tastes. So, unless you have lots of $$ and just want something new, or you just can't find a clean used boat, why buy new?
P.S. At the last minute, the guy threw in his hard-bottomed dinghy and nearly new OB for free! |

Hello Mark,
There are some big advantages to buying a 1-4 yr old C42 boat. They are basically the same as the new boat They can be bought for nearly half the cost of a new boat. The PO will have ironed out all the minor problems with the factory for you You can get lots of extra equipment thrown in with the deal You dont have to wait You can see and try it before you buy. It really is a no brainer, but the problem is finding one. I lucked out when just the one I wanted turned up in the SF bay area. Hope this helps ... Joe.
