Posts: 96 10/01/07 09:24:40	Tags : None Just a note to all. My aft head in my '94 Mk1 2 cabin kept flooding when on port tack. The answer was simple when I saw the sink full and flooding down onto the floor and filling the shower basin. A wonderful siphon. Anyway, I turned off the drain valve at the through hull and when back in port I tried to open it and the handle came off in my hand. Now I need to replace it and need the specs on the threads, etc.. Has anyone replaced one of these without pulling out of the water. I guess it could be done, but there would be a fountain as you took one off and put the new one in. Posts: 33 10/01/07 10:12:12	I have replaced a thru-hull valve with the boat in the water--in fact, two. Each was connected to head intakes. First time, I was scared enough to do a short dive to wedge a pine plug into the outer hole. Learned it wasn't needed, since one can easily block the incoming geyser with one's hand. Just need to have the replacement valve-body in arm's reach. The valve-body unscrews from the thru-hull simply enough--when you get to that final thread, you can quickly remove the valve-body and replace it with a sweaty palm in less than a second--you'll be energized by the impressive splash as the water begins to enter . . . Then, in the reverse sequence, replace the palm with the new valve-body (valve closed, of course) and carefully thread it down until leak-free. The entire operation takes five minutes (I rehearsed it mentally a thousand times and physically twice or three times), and if you're quick, a single shop-towel wrapped around the thru-hull base can catch all the water that comes in during the operation. It's almost anti-climactic in retrospect. We got our replacement valve at West Marine--the small store near us had it in stock on the rack. Posts: 146 10/01/07 10:40:26	Just FWIW... If you are using Marelon plastic thruhull valves, their life can be much prolonged by lubing the ball inside the valve with Lanocote. Put a generous glob on the ball each time you have access to the dry fitting; during install, or during haulout, and stiff plastic valves will turn smoothly again. When hauled out, I take off the hose so I can apply Lanocote to the upper side of the closed fitting, and then go outside where I can apply it to the bottom of the fitting, reaching up through the thruhull. I then rotate the handle after coating each side to spread it inside the ball chamber. They also now make a spray which is easier to use. Lanocote is also useful for a score of other jobs, such as protecting a stainless bolt passing through aluminum from galling. James White Star #450 Puerto Vallarta

Posts: 46 10/02/07 17:52:49	Just a side note on the large thru hulls. When you tighten the thru hulls be carefull not to tighten the valve body. By using a wrench on the base you should avoid this. Newer valves have a pin inserted between the valv body and the base to prevent this from happening. I had a couple of frozen thru hulls and after finding this out I was able to back the body off the base about a quarter turn and free the valve. The valve torque is set at the factory. It is very hard to install the valves without turning them from the top. To tell if your valve is the new type, (pinned), look real close, (using a small dental type mirror) you can see a hole were the pin was inserted. It is inserted looking at the base. Posts: 29 10/03/07 09:47:20	Before you remove the thru-hull pull a tarp from each side to cover the area where the opening is. When you remove the thru-hull outside water pressure pushes the tarp in to seal the area and no leak. I used this method to replace the thru-hull on the speed transducer on my C-36 Bruce Gorle Lifes Tough 903 2cab

Posts: 54 10/03/07 12:31:39	Count - we changed a thru-hull on a previous boat by taking advantage of the tides. A local marina actually has a tidal grid that you tie to at high tide and wait for the tide to go out. You change your thru-hull, then wait for the tide to come back in. Lacking an actual tidal grid, any pier or dock would work so long as you feel you can securely tie to it. If you are planning a visit to Bainbridge Island in the near future, that's where we used the tidal grid.

Posts: 253 10/03/07 20:31:07	For what's it worth, I've changed my 3/4" thru hulls twice while the boat is in water. Take the hose off first, unscrew the valve until it is on with only a few threads, wrap new teflon tape on the exposed threads on the thru hull, take off the old valve and immediately replace with new valve, screw down new valve, reattach hose and your done. I think it took 10 mins each time from start to finish. No big problem, the water pressures isn't that much. Be prepared like Doug stated above. Steve 642-2f TESA

I contacted kent@catalinayachts.com and he sent me a fine diagram of all the ball valve and through hull, a spec of a single in section drawing, and the Do's and Don'ts of how to install them. Very good stuff. After calling Fisheries Supply for a new unit I was told by them that Forespar unit that comes with boat has slightly different threads on the glassed in part of the through hull and he recommended replacing the Forespar only with Forespar because of issues he has had to deal with. Any one out there ever replaced a Forespar plastice ball valve with a metal one? Did it work easily? I will be getting the original plastic again and some Lanocote.
