Posts: 45 09/16/07 11:04:29	Tags : None I just discovered that the sink in the forward head drains to a thruhull that is BELOW the water line. Obviously this means that water going down the drain remains in the hose until there is enough built up to overcome the incoming water pressure. I don't like the odor from stagnant grey water. All of my previous boats (power boats) drained above the water line therefore the water completely drains.. Anybody know why Catalina does it this way? Also, is there any reason I can't use this tap into this line and add my air conditioning condensation hose. The a/c compressor is located approx 3 ft aboe the thruhull and the condensation hose drips into the bilge. Don Solitude V Hull 940 - 2 Cabin St. Pete, FL

Posts: 5 01/27/08 19:15:12	Hello I am responding to your remarks about stagnant gray water in the forward head sink. I am selling something quite useful for sinks and shower bases. It is a "Self-Sealing Waste Valve or waterless trap for short. Basically it a tube with swivel nuts on either end that has a rubber membrane inside it, the down end of this tube is flat, the design will allow water and hair and food particles to go through but not the other way. This design will withstand 10 - 15 times the back pressure of a water p-trap. We are selling these devices now to the RV market. They have a problem of traps emtyping out due to movement of the vehicle. Posts: 19 01/28/08 13:03:03	In reading the posts I had a question about the sinks draining. I've noticed, compared to my previous boat, that the sinks drain very slowly. Is this because the water in the sink is overcoming the preasure of the water still in the thru hull tube? Since that drain line will keep water in it up to the waterline level. In my '94 model, the foreward starboard sink drain takes an almost 90 degree bend to travel to it's thruhull in the foreward stateroom. Sailor Dan SV Lydia Grace C42 #429

Posts: 252 01/28/08 21:55:49	I can hardly believe the water in the drain line is never recycled from the motion of water past the thru hull or just from normal rocking of the boat. Has anyone tested this? If it drains above the water line I would expect you have a stain after a while from the water flowing out. Steve 642-2f TESA

Posts: 261 01/29/08 07:50:35	On our previous boat, a Catalina 400, one head sink drained above the water line and one drained below the water line. They both worked fine, with absolutely no problems. Frankly, with all of the "Clean Marina" issues sprouting up, and a potential future legal issue with gray water discharge, I greatly prefer to have all the drains below the water line. Out of sight, out of mind, as far as spurring the attention of those who would place more restrictions on us. Like Steve, I have a hard time understanding the "stagnant gray water" issue. Virtually every sink in every house has a trap that really does hold a quantity of stagnant water. RVs are much worse, since there is both a trap and a waste storage tank. The drain line on our boats does not have a trap. Unless the boat remains absolutely motionless it is hard to imagine water remaining in the drain line long enough to become stagnant. The type of plastic tubing used for the drain line has an internal volume of 2.5 ounces per foot of length. In other words, a piece of line 3 feet long would hold less than a cup of water. Posts: 212 01/29/08 13:46:39	I do not see a problem with a drain being below the water line. It should flow as quickly regardless of whether it is above or below the water line as the major force driving the flow is simply the elevation of the sink drain above the water line (water always seeks its own level.) Regarding the stagnant grey water, I would see that is a minimal issue since the last water to drain is most likely 99+% pure water. We haven't had a problem with water draining, nor any smells.
