I have a 4JHBE, (same as 4JHE), I'm told the B designates the transmission model. I have the Kanzaki and I believe it may be the KBW21. The difference
between the KBW 20 and 21 as stated in the shop manual is that the KBW21 has higher strength gears obtained through a hardening process than the KBW 20 but
that dimensionally both are the same. They go on to state that the KBW21 is ok for the higher HP turbo versions, the 4JH-HTE (60hp) and 4JH-DTE (77 hp) but
that the KBW20 version is not suitable for these higher HP models. The KBW 20 is only suitable for the 4JHE (44hp) and 4JH-TE (55hp). The reason that I think I
have the 21 is that is has a tranny oil cooler on the starboard side and the manual states this coolor is only used on the KBW21 version.
This oil question is interesting as I happened to notice in my Yanmar manual on the weekend that the the suggested fluid is ATF, however, the PO told me to use the same oil as motor, SAE 30W, so that is what has been used. I"m now looking at the Yanmar shop manual for motor and tranny and it states to use Dexron ATF for both the 20 and 21 models.
The Kanzaki is a Hurth type/design tranny which has a very good reputation.
So the mystery on type of tranny fluid continues.
