Posts: 621 08/27/07 16:28:58 Moderator	Tags : None If you have a recent (maybe 3-4 yr old) Ray Star 120 or 125 GPS, you may need a firmware upgrade to get back to the WAAS accuracy you had a short time ago. In summary, NASA recently changed 2 WAAS satellites and your GPS may need a firmware upgrade to use them. All the gory details can be found at: https://raymarine.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/raymarine.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1321 If you haven't upgraded C-series firmware in the past 6 months, you would be in for a pleasant surprise, they added a LOT of features to the C120, C80, C70. One of their biggest improvements is controlling most of a Raymarine auto pilot directly from the chart plotter. They also added range rings around your position (on the chart, rhe radar already had that). With this new WAAS issue, I'm sure they will upgrade the E-Series soon, hopefully adding the auto pilot controll. Posts: 200 08/27/07 17:56:57	As a fan of Raymarine, I am a little disappointed that they didn't incorporate these WAAS related software changes earlier. There is simply no excuse since the WAAS system changes were announced by the FCC in 2005. The new WAAS satellites (PanAmSat & Telesat) were launched in late 2005. Information aslo indicates that the Raystar 120/125 can "see" the new WAAS satellite but that the C/E series simply ignores the new WAAS satellite ID. Indeed, Raymarine admits that if you use a Raystar 120/125 connected via NMEA to another manufacturer's plotter, the new WAAS satellite ID is recognized and used. Posts: 163 08/28/07 05:25:06	The C & E series sortware upgrades can be downloaded from the Raymarine site onto CF cards via a CF card reader. I purchased a CF card reader from Radio Shack ($5) and CF and small (64 meg) cards. The small cards are cheap and you should look for them in a discount store. You only need 1 meg for your waypoints and 12 meg for the software. Buy some extra cards as you can load your waypoints and routes from your Raymarine planning software and upload them to the Chartplotter. You can also download all of your waypoints for archive (backup).

I would like to add you can download their Free C and E-Series Waypoint Transfer Utility and use Excel to type in long descriptions... and easily make waypoint names consistent. I went to the site and dowloaded and installed v 4.25, which has a number of goodies in it, but does not contain the WAAS fix. Create a directory and copy the file into it 4. Unzip the file 5. Copy the two unzipped files autorun.don and {plotter_model_vxxx.pkg}, to a compact flash CF memory card, The extension is .pkg but the file name will vary depending on the model selected. 6. With your chartplotter turned off, remove the Navionics card and replace it with the CF card containing the 2 files. 7. Turn on the unit and press the button under the Upgrade Prompt. 8. The upgrade takes about 30 seconds. 9. Turn off the unit and replace the card with the Navionics card. Quick and painless. BTW I owned a SL series plotter on my last boat, and the firmware was upgradeable, but it required a technician to hardwire his laptop to the plotter and upgrade using some proprietary software. Its worth asking what the Raymarine plans are for their older models.
