week or so is this a good idea. My battery charger is still getting current when I do so I
figured why let all that unneeded current go through the boat. Any suggestions or comments
would be welcome. Thanks

I like to have it on because the shorepower LED glows and lets me know I have the Marinco cable plugged in correctly and the dockbox connection enabled. The
MK2 may be different than your wiring.

Thanks for your reply Joe I have a three cabin pullman. The light on the panel will flicker
once in a while when the shore power switch is on, but I do not like to leave it on if I am not going to be on my boat for a while Phil second wind #95 |

Unless you need to leave your battery charger turned or to run the refrigeration, I think it is best not only to turn off the shorepower switch but also to
unplug the dockwire. One reason is that many of the older C42s do not have a Galvanic Isolator and you risk electrolysis damage. Another reason is somewhat
dependent on your location, but if another boat in your marina that is plugged-in is hit by lightning a high voltage spike may travel over the shorepower line
to your boat and damage electronics.

Gerry-
Any idea when they started including the galvanic isolators? And where it would be located? Thanks David Kennedy Wave Dancer II, 3 Cabin Mark I, #303

David,
It's not likely that you have one. My hull is #343 and I had to add one to the boat.

Why does your charger have juice with the main breaker off ????? What protects the circuit?

David,
I don't know when they added Galvanic Isolators as standard equipment. I added one myself. It is located in the port seat locker where the AC power enters the boat. Gerry #108 |

Maybe MK I's are wired differently than my MK II? On Threepenny Opera, the battery charger is down stream of the 30 AMP DP breaker on the panel, so If I
open the breaker, I would not power any AC load on the boat, which would include the battery charger.
Are you sure the battery charger is charging when the switch is off? or are you just seeing residual voltage on your panel meter, immediately after you open the breaker? With regards to the galvanic isolator, I have hull 640 and there was no galvanic isolator on the boat. For the difference in price, I've installed a Charles G2 Isolation transformer, which provides protection from both bad shore side wiring as well as galvanic isolation. Addison

Our C42 came with the galvanic isolator in the starboard cockpit locker next to the AC switch. It looks like Catalina may have started installing them with the
1999 or 2000 model. We keep the shore power connected while we are away from the boat to keep the batteries charged and run the dehumidifier. Also, I figure
if the boat happens to spring a slow leak while we are away it has a fighting chance of not sinking if the bilge pump keeps working.

Thanks for all your replys. When my shore power switch is off on the panel I am still getting
power to my charger it is in the starboard cockpit locker the status lights are lit and the fan is running. My electrician told me it really does not matter whether I leave the shore power switch on or not phil second #95 |
