Philip,
Look further down the discussion list to a topic titled "Sailing in gear or not". There are several posts there answering your question.

Hi Phillip
The Yanmar folks suggest to put the tranny into reverse. I have sailed several boats over the last 25 years with Yanmar engines and have yet to place them in reverse when under sail. Sometimes the noise gets pretty loud especially when you are hitting 7+ knots but so far I have never had a problem with the transmission. I just feel uncomfortable starting the engine in reverse- and placing all that stress on the transmission, when under sail, with the engine locked in reverse. So as far as I am concerned - I take the noise. Some say that another solution is to buy a folding prop. That takes care of the problem once and for all. But I personally like a solid prop- keeps it simple. Peter C'est la Vie Hull #746 |

I lock it in reverse under sail. I also start it in reverse. However, I do plan on getting a feathering or folding prop down the road to solve the problem (and
prop walk) issue permanently.

I guess I will listen to the majority and lock into reverse and start in reverse. Thanks for all the good advice

I was surprised to learn that even a feathering prop will freewheel a bit because the prop shaft is angled into the slip stream and that causes unbalanced
force on the feathered blades. I have a Martec feathering and lock the tranny in reverse for least drag. The problem is less if the blades are independent and
not geared together as in the Martec. But I'm told that even the Autoprop which has independent blades has to be locked to keep from spinning.

I was told by the distributor to leave my Autoprop in forward while under sail.
